Conduct at Chuck E. Cheese described as 'madness'
Pennlive.com ^ | January 7, 2009 | MATTHEW KEMENY

The wobbly video shows a group of adults mulling inside Chuck E. Cheese's restaurant in Susquehanna Twp. Suddenly it pans left and captures a fight breaking out.

The 22-second clip, uploaded Sunday to YouTube, is the latest example of what police describe as a disturbing and bizarre crime trend: escalating violence among adults at a place designed for children's birthday parties.

Susquehanna Township police have been called to the restaurant on Union Deposit Road 12 times in the past year for reports of disorderly conduct, assault and theft. Those calls have resulted in 13 arrests, including six women -- five adults and a juvenile -- charged with disorderly conduct in a Saturday-night brawl.

In 2007, police responded to the restaurant 18 times for similar offenses.

"It's madness, absolute madness," Susquehanna Twp. Police Chief Robert A. Martin said.

Martin said he believes much of the violence stems from ongoing disputes among people who bump into each other in the restaurant. "They see each other at Chuck E. Cheese, and before you know it an argument turns into something physical."

We took my first son to Chuckie’s in the late 80’s. Yes, it was a mad house. Still, it was kids. They have fun running around and being noisy...it's a place for kids. We were loyal customers for years. We finally stopped going in 2002. The “kids” were now panhandling for tokens, pushing other kids of off machines (after they were loaded up with tokens) and taking tickets (snatch and run).

The title of the video is “Pregnant Ghetto fight”, which appears to be apt and would have made a memorable headline for this piece.

1. I didn’t need to read the article or even see the video before forming a hypothesis. Sure enough, I was correct. Casual statistical analysis of observed data (ie. stereotypes) are usually born out.

2. Once I read the story and saw the names, the pretext of my hypothesis was further strengthened.

3. Once I saw the video, that was all she wrote.

Once when I was coming home on a vacation from Iraq I was driving from DFW to OK to check on some storage stuff. I was still tired and strung out from the heat and hours in Iraq then my (bad) back went out. It was night time and I was totally lost and disoriented. I pulled off onto an exit and pulled into a parking lot to call the fiance for help. She asked where I was and being out of it the only thing I could tell her was I was “in a parking lot with a giant g-d rat over me”. She realized I was under the sign of a Chuckie Cheese, looked up which one online and gave me directions to get back on the right interstate.

Chuck Cheese is really nasty — We used to go - but thought the place was a germ breeding ground with all the little kids coughing, digging in their noses and butts. I didn't like getting panhandled for tokens by a bunch of 6 year olds while their parents sit by drinking sucky draft beer and stuffing themselves with Chuck's nasty pizza.

Before I left L.A. (about 10 years ago) gangbangers had taken over a local all-night Jewish deli. ....in a good neighboorhood. After 10:00pm, enter at one’s own risk.

Maybe it’s because they first ate the pizza. Chuck E Cheese “pizza” is the most godawful concoction of semi-cooked glop I’ve ever tried to digest. Maybe the arguers were just reacting to indigestion and taking it out on other patrons.

I got caught in a Chuck E. Cheese one time, the result of an overgenerous offer to assist with a birthday party. Blaring music, flashing lights, an audioanimatronic rat, screaming kids, sticky floors, jammed rest rooms, and no alcohol. I’m a reformed man now, because if I ever to get sentenced to Hell that’s exactly where I’m gonna end up.
