A U.S. Navy commander will lead a new international force to battle pirates off the coast of Somalia.
More than 20 nations are expected to take part in the mission once it is fully underway later this month. The announcement Thursday by U.S. Navy officials in Bahrain did not list the countries participating, but said the new force will be headed by U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Terence McKnight.
Merchant fleets have been calling for a stronger military response to pirates after a sharp escalation in attacks last year. At least 111 ships were attacked and more than 40 of them commandeered.
It is not clear whether the new anti-pirate force will have any expanded powers to battle pirates.
Make a few of them walk the plank, and this will stop.
....to the shores of Tripoli.....
if they are not allowed to have armsn in port, then just pick up a crew of security men as you leave the port and drop them off before you arrive at port.
A few missles and problem solved
Why?
China and India have ships and different rules of engagement. They are not hampered by the laws we face.
Let them do it.
Forget the plank, turn their pirating asses into shark chum and it's game over. Let me be the first Air Force vet to congratulate my Navy brethren on what I'm sure will be a successful pirate elimination mission. I've never uttered these words, but here goes -- GO NAVY!
Bush had how long?,
to do something.
Agreed. This is all we need right now. A few videos of US servicemen shooting brown-skinned pirates. Wonderful.
The Leftist ACLU-type organizations will be lined up around the block to prosecute any US sailor who fires on the pirates, just like in Irq.
Believe it or not there are brown-skinned US servicemen who have no problem shooting America's enemies regardless of their skin tone. Their oath of enlistment lacks any regard for the skin tone of America's enemies. Let's not turn this into a racial incident, the US military doesn't engage America's enemies based on race.
So the Navy vessels will just cruise around but never actually engage the pirates?
Agreed, but the international Left will make it a racial/imperialistic issue.
