I think it's weirder than that. They have managed to ju-jitsu their sense of guilt into a sense of self-righteousness. "I'm so morally sensitive that I feel guilty over matters you are too coarse even to notice -- even when you're doing and - gasp - enjoying them!"

I was talking to an anthropologist about the bonding process among "warriors" or people who put themselves in harm's way for a living. She expressed a thought that maybe "they shouldn't be allowed" to joke about what they do!
