For most, they are innocent tales that define childhood.
But some parents are ditching fairytales, believing they are politically incorrect or 'too dark' to read to children, a survey has found.
One in four mothers has abandoned the likes of Cinderella and Rapunzel in favour of The Gruffalo or The Very Hungry Caterpillar, written in 1969 by Eric Carle.
One in ten parents even said Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs should be re-titled - because 'the dwarf reference is not PC'.
Rapunzel is considered 'too dark' and Cinderella outdated, because she is forced to do the housework.
The poll of 3,000 British parents, carried out by TheBabyWebsite.com, revealed 66 per cent believe traditional fairytales have stronger morality messages than modern equivalents.
But many feel they are inappropriate to soothe youngsters before bed.
Most of the tales were made popular by the brothers Grimm in their Grimms' Fairy Tales, published in 1812.

I guess “Little Black Sambo” is out of the question.
Nothing wrong with being a dwarf ~ and if dwarf characters can show up in timeless literature, the better.
Technically speaking 4'10" and below defines the size of a dwarf. Remember those old pictures of your great, great grandmothers? Check out how tall they were. Might be an interesting exercise to help your children understand what it's all about.
Don’t these liberal jackasses realize that ‘PC’ is just replacing one morality for another? They scream about right wing fundamentalist religion while shoving their left wing fundamentalist religion down everyone’s throat.
O.M.G - words fail - THIS from the country that gave us JRR Tolkien who highly prized fairy tales. England, you have fallen so far! The orcs have sundered the Shire!
And now we know why Europe will soon be under Islamic rule. Wonder what PC Islamism looks like?
How about ditching politically correct parents.
Buncha weenies!
My favorite was always........and then the dragon ate the
prince and princess and lived happily ever after.
There are some great Bros. Grimm ones, enough to leave a
child shaking in fear all night.
Idiots raising morons.
Jeez. No Sleeping Beauty (what would they think of Fairy Tale Theater?)? No Princess and the Pea? [big sigh] Good thing I kept all my books.
ping!
Well said Penelopesire...and see DevNet, this is what many people see here on FR, the lunatic godless secular humanist left being overly PC and trying to squash traditional and Christian heritage from this country will lead to what we are now seeing in Europe!
Why read the classics when you can read them Captain Underpants!!!
Oh just the best Disney movie ever! Uncle Remus was such a wonderful, positive character. I despise Political Correctness! (But have a copy of the movie from when we lived overseas!)
Or in short, wards of the state.
hell... couldn’t they wait until jan 20?
be ready, the clinton years of pc garbage is coming back (they already cue’d up homo’s in the military for one of their first plays)
And a “Happy zippidy doodah to you, today.”
Great movie and music. Now wonder the leftists don’t like it.
Rap is “crap” without the “c”.
THIS from the country that gave us JRR Tolkien who highly prized fairy tales. And I started reading his books when I was in the 3rd grade ("The Hobbit").. I've read it at least 5 times up until now. I advanced to "The Lord of the Rings" by the 5th grade. I've read the 'Trilogy' (there were actually 4 books, last one was sort of an appendix for the whole story) at least 10 times now.. and am reading it again every night before I sleep (on the 2 Towers, about halfway through)... But he made great fiction stories... MUCH deeper than Grimm and too complex for most kids. BUT, he had me interested quickly. The fairy tales spoken about here are to teach moral values in a simple way (life in general); and Tolkien just gave the same values in black and white in a much deeper analogy. PC is for pussies that can't handle someone who has moral values.
Mom??? What the heck is with the new age fairy tale stuff. Gimme Hans Christian Andersen or some of them Grimm Brothers, for Chrissake.Agreed 100%!!!
How about "Uncle Remus?" Please, don't throw me into the briar patch! B-)Briar Rabbit was my favorite... had the book when I was MUCH younger..
The movie was called Song of the SouthHad never seen it until I came to Japan.. Had to do a crudload of torrent searches to find it. Finally was able to DL it and watch it for the first time about a year ago... What is wrong with a does of good natured history?! :0
How about “Uncle Remus?”
He will now be called Uncle Obama.
Grimm stories are my favorite. Make sure to buy a book that has the original unedited stories though...
Those old fairy tales taught good life lessons and morals. I guess that’s why the ‘modern’ parents consider them ‘offensive’.
Mary had a little lamb
Its fleece was black as soot
and everywhere that Mary went
Its sooty foot he put
