NEW YORK The New York Times will start running Op-Ed columns from rock singer Bono of U2 on Sunday, the paper announced Friday. He will also do a podcast of the piece.
Describing him as a "lead singer and anti-poverty activist," the announcement said he has been invited to write a column for the Times beginning this Sunday, and "his columns will appear occasionally on The New York Times Op-Ed page and online at nytimes.com/opinion and will cover a broad range of subjects."
Bono is a great addition to our Op-Ed line-up, Andrew Rosenthal, Times editorial page editor, said in a statement. He is an extraordinary man who thinks deeply about his art and the major issues confronting the world. His writing will reflect that.
What an honor, Bono added in the release. I've never been great with the full stops or commas. Lets see how far we can take this.
The Times announcement also said: "Bono has been a leader in the fight against AIDS and poverty in Africa since his initial involvement in the debt cancellation campaign of 1998, when he began lobbying governments across the G8 to free poor countries from odious debts so they could spend more on health and education. Since then, he has continued working on debt relief and trade reform while becoming a vocal advocate for global health. He has worked publicly and behind the scenes in the U.S. and Europe to help generate a global response to the AIDS emergency in Africa and for additional support to combat deaths from malaria and other preventable, treatable diseases."
"The U2 front man was born Paul David Hewson in Ballymun, Dublin. He met the Edge, Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton at school, and in 1978 the Irish rock band was formed. U2 has sold more than 140 million albums and won numerous awards, including 22 Grammys."
He is not the record holder ... he IS the record...
It’s probably a good strategic move on the part of NYT.
I cannot stand that Bono guy, talk about a pompous ass. He is one of those whiney “do what I say, not what I do” fancy pants libtards.
I think I’ll wait for Ozzy Osbourne’s.
Truly, I an underwhelmed by this news.
John Lennon unavailable?
Bono represents an improvement in intellectual capability at the Times Editorial Desk.
I recently got taken on as a citizen journalist with my local paper. I wonder how many other writers got shafted because this pompous prig got taken on.

I wish someone would humiliate him. In public.
Every day in every way, the NY Slimes becomes more and more suitable only for potty training puppies.
Hello, Hello.. This, is, Bono!!!!
I am number 1. I am not number 2, no one will ever call me number 2.
Bono gets to write an op-ed but a Presidential candidate of a major party is denied.
Great moments in Rock and Roll History. The day Paul Hewson changed his name to “Bono.”
“’Allo Paul, how’s it going?”
“Uh, I’d prefer from now on you call me ‘Bono.’”
“Bono?!? You’ve gone off your bleedin’ rocker, you have.”
This should up their circulation by...dozens.
It's like a sitcom in the last year before it is cancelled when the producer and writers bring in increasingly strange guest stars to try to save the show.
Oh, you’re bad!
I LAUGHED out loud... but you’re bad.
Will Bono pay taxes in Ireland? He needs to support poverty.
The Times is making no effort, none, to remain economically viable. They make Enron and Lehman look like thoughtful, responsible corporations.
Doesn’t Bono hold the record as the world’s largest crap?

Oh please. The NYT noticed the Waco Tribune Herald signed Ted Nugent for an op ed column and this is their “fair and balanced” response.
Sadly Bono seems to believe everything he reads in the papers so he is just a useful idiot for the NYSLIMES to hang their hat on!
Wouldn’t it be great to be a rock singer and know everything about everything!
Mel
Meanwhile, the libs are beside themselves because Joe The Plumber is going to report from Israel on PJtv.
I think P-Diddy would have better choice. Or Kanye West op-editing on hurricanes.
Bono made a ton of cash today. He just invested $100 million in Palm when their stock was at $3.00. It is now at $6.10.
#2?
