Belfast’s prosecution on the torture charges was the first ever under a statute that criminalizes torture and provides U.S. courts jurisdiction to hear cases involving acts of torture committed outside the United States if the offender is a U.S. national or is present in the United States, regardless of nationality

Although this man is richly deserving of jail I have a real problem with this. On what basis do we have the right to extend our laws to a foreign country. If I were tried in Saudi Arabia for things that I do here in the United States that are perfectly legal, they would lock me up forever after canning me. A proper canning in Saudi Arabia is done by a very skilled man than whips until you are on the verge of death but not quite there. This is a slippery slope we have climbed out on.
