Low on cash, French Quarter may stink again Bad economy means New Orleans may cut back on sanitation services Jan. 9, 2009 NEW ORLEANS - Since Hurricane Katrina, the beer-soaked, urine-splashed, puke-puddled French Quarter of old has been scrubbed clean. But with the city facing tough financial times, it may no longer be able to afford to pay for all the services of an army of sanitation workers who pick up after the partying.

I was there about 9 months ago.

Took me a while to figure out what the stench was. I’d say it was primarily horse droppings from those carriages that go up and down the street.

Gee and it's close to Mardi Gras too, you'd think they'd want the Quarter to at least smell nice since it's the only cash cow they've got. Could it be that they want to get S.T. out of his contract and give it to a buddy instead? Nah, dirty politics in New Orleans? Say it ain't so!

Let’s be honest. It’s not the entire Quarter that smells like that. It’s mostly Bourbon Street.

I would suspect your average mardi gras reveler isn’t going to be terribly worried about a lack of sanitation or any noxious odors coming from the french quarter.

So will Air Force 0 and the White House, but I haven't noticed MSDNC getting worked up about that.

The French Quarter has always and will always smell bad. It is a combination of its proximity to the river, hundred year old drains and sewers, and tightly packed bars on some streets.

It is part of the personality of the city, just like tree roots breaking through the sidewalk.

To say the French Quarter reeks is an understatement to be sure. There’s no room between or behind buildings, so the garbage cans sit on the sidewalk and fester. All summer the temperature is 90 degrees and the humidity is 90%. The drunks and druggies spit, pee, poo and puke everywhere. By the looks of them they don’t spill much beer, but I’m sure there’s some of that on the ground too. It’s the dirtiest place I have ever been.

I used to have to go to New Orleans on business. The best part of the trip was wheels up on the flight home. There were roaches everywhere and the place smelled like a mixture of piss and vomit. I remember sitting in a conference in a hotel ballroom and watching a cockroach crawl up the wall.

They’ve got to find a way to let Sidney keep doing his thing in the Vieux Carre. Take the money from other projects, but keep the Quarter lemony fresh.

It’s a rank, foul, cesspool of a place occupied by a bunch of scurvy dudes.

Let’s be even more honest. It’s not even all of Bourbon Street that smells like that. It’s Iberville to Saint Ann, where the freak show mostly goes on.
