Former President George H. W. Bush will be honored for his military career when the U.S. Navy commissions its new aircraft carrier Saturday at Naval Station Norfolk.
The president's son, President Bush, will speak as the Navy commissions the 1,092-foot CVN-77, which will be named the USS George H.W. Bush.
"The president is honored to participate in the commissioning of the USS George H.W. Bush both as the commander in chief and as a proud son," White House spokesman Carlton F. Carroll told The Washington Times.
On Friday, workers finished the last details on the nuclear-powered carrier, which towers 20 stories above the waterline and has a flight deck width of 252 feet. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the 11 a.m. event Saturday, according to Navy officials.

"The aircraft carrier will be the 10th and final Nimitz-class sub and the ninth in the Navy's fleet."
Jimminy Karter got a submarine. /Hah!
I wasn't crazy about President Bush 41, but he was one heck of an Navel Aviator, and certainly deserves this honor.
I actually object to the abuse of the exception carved out for President Reagan who, although still alive, had given an entirely new meaning to the term "political suicide" with his farewell letter announcing his Alzheimer's Disease diagnosis. Now we are to take it as routine that a son names a capital ship after his yet-living father. It really isn't cricket, you know . . .
Clinton and Obama will get carriers. The last three carriers have been Republicans - Reagan, Bush, and the soon-to-be-built Gerald Ford. My prediction is that the next four will be the John F. Kennedy(II), the William J. Clinton, the Brarack H. Obama, and the new Enterprise will be in the mix somewhere because they've gotta keep all the Star Trek fans happy.
I spent enough time in the navy, and know the enlisted mind well enough, to be able of think of half a dozen nicknames based on the name that will be applied to the ship by her crew.
Two Bushes set to commission unfinished carrier
The Navy is rushing to commission its newest aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, while its namesake's son is still commander-in-chief. In an unusual move, the early January commissioning ceremony will take place before the Navy has accepted delivery of the ship or conducted sea trials. The Nimitz-class carrier, built by Northrop Grumman Corp. at its Newport News, Va., shipyard, is rated at 97% complete.
What would that new meaning be?
Amen - and we'll never see a movie or book about his heroic story - pubbies don't count
I doubt it's a tweak, just a courtesy. Why wouldn't Junior as commander in chief want to preside of the commissioning of a carrier named for his father?
Besides, the Navy isn't stupid. Obama holds the purse strings for the next 4 years. You don't tweak the man with the money.
I don’t like the naming after presidents except the Reagan.
bring back names like uss Midway and Lexington
Bush can be a problematic last name if you want to get a carrier named after you.
Oh well. At least his name wasn’t “Target” or “Relic.”
“Bush” alone conjures up any number of possible nicknames.
They've been doing it for 60 years.
Deserves it, my ass.
Major fleet units, capital ships, should be named after historic military victories (Lexington, Yorktown) or states (Missouri, Iowa). Since SSB(N)s have taken over the state name tradition of the BBs, I think we should stick with tradition.
However much you think of them, the USS George H.W. Bush and the USS Gerald Ford make inevitable the USS William J. Clinton and the USS Barack Hussein Obama.
Naming ships after politicians, especially living ones, should never have been permitted.
And now, it's made the future disgrace of a USS Clinton inevitable. It's shameful.
I went through Department Head School with another officer who had done a tour with a squadron off the Kennedy. He had a patch on his flight jacket from a Med Cruise that had a picture of an outhouse and the words “Big John” and “The Head of the Med”. You can imagine what Bush will be like.
Now! I corrected that error!
I know the worship of politicians started after the war but the ships named after battles and admirals are all retired now.
“a new world order”
Not WaPo, WaTi. Even less excusable.
Yes, you are correct. But it makes ME feel better thinking it is just to tweak Zero’s nose!
Clinton and Dear Leader have never served a second in our Armed Forces.
The naming of ships for living presidents began with Ronald Reagan.
Nimitz is still around.
The naming of ships for living politicians started with the Carl Vinson and continued through the John Stennis.
I can’t stand to think of a USS Clinton. Lets go back to using state names.
What did you think would happen after Jerry Ford and Poppy Bush got carriers, when the wheel turned?
Lessee, here... Fun Facts about CVN-77:
They don’t serve broccoli in the Officers’ Mess;
The all-hands call “Now Hear This!” is replaced by “Read My Lips!”
The first accident sustained by CVN-77 will involve a torpedoing accident by the USS Ross Perot.
Now THAT’s some funny stuff!!! LOL
Not nearly as good as was Flags of Our Fathers, but it was in part about GHWB's exploits in the Pacific.
A few weeks ago, I watched while they towed the USS Bush "deadship" from the Newport News builder's yard over to the NOB (Naval Operations Base) Norfolk for the Commisioning...The timing being for the sole purpose of allowing President Bush to get this done while still in office. The mighty Bush being able to get out its own way? No way. A tweak of Zero's nose? YOU BETCHA!
Besides that Clintoon already has that GARBAGE SCOW with his name on it.
I corrected that error long ago!
After hearing the things said about former George H.W. Bush, I can’t for this life of me imagine anything close ever being said about the next president to be sworn in....
Shoot!!! Too bad they didn’t call the new ship “The Read My Lips”.

“Naming ships after politicians, especially living ones, should never have been permitted.”
Totally agree - or anything, for that matter. Like the Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage.
A very moving ceremony indeed. I hate to think what it would have been like if President Elect Barack Hussein Obama had been in office already. He would most likely have had representatives from the Kenyan Navy there. After all he has no U.S. Military background nor does he have any close relatives who served in the U.S. Military. I guess thats a problem for all of the African Americans running around wondering who be their daddy.
I wonder if this is the last time we will see President Bush give a speech? Very bittersweet occasion, I am so glad that the commissioning was able to be done before January 20, 2009.
This was a very special Bush family ceremony.
GHWB: born June 12, 1924 - a Carrier pilot before he was twenty years old!
The Captain of CVN 77 stated that pilot Bush flew 58 combat missions. The cspan crawl stated that he flew “several” missions! The staff of cspan responsible for wriing the crawl messages continue their mission of insulting anything Republican-related. They must all be totally devoted to their prime viewers - the radical leftist callers, and the cable companies who pay the bills.
Carter’s Navel career was on Submarines.
