Navy to commission CVN-77, USS George H.W. Bush

Former President George H. W. Bush will be honored for his military career when the U.S. Navy commissions its new aircraft carrier Saturday at Naval Station Norfolk.

The president's son, President Bush, will speak as the Navy commissions the 1,092-foot CVN-77, which will be named the USS George H.W. Bush.

"The president is honored to participate in the commissioning of the USS George H.W. Bush both as the commander in chief and as a proud son," White House spokesman Carlton F. Carroll told The Washington Times.

On Friday, workers finished the last details on the nuclear-powered carrier, which towers 20 stories above the waterline and has a flight deck width of 252 feet. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the 11 a.m. event Saturday, according to Navy officials.

I am certain there will be no US Navy ship named after Obama or Clinton. It is a travesty enough that a US submarine bears the name of Jimmy Carter.

After hearing the things said about former George H.W. Bush, I can’t for this life of me imagine anything close ever being said about the next president to be sworn in....

Watching live...gosh, I will miss this family. What a wonderful ceremony. Gov. Kaine's remarks were very gracious to the Bush family and our military. W speaking now...what an honor for him to celebrate his dad.

“Naming ships after politicians, especially living ones, should never have been permitted.”
Totally agree - or anything, for that matter. Like the Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage.

A very moving ceremony indeed. I hate to think what it would have been like if President Elect Barack Hussein Obama had been in office already. He would most likely have had representatives from the Kenyan Navy there. After all he has no U.S. Military background nor does he have any close relatives who served in the U.S. Military. I guess thats a problem for all of the African Americans running around wondering who be their daddy.

I wonder if this is the last time we will see President Bush give a speech? Very bittersweet occasion, I am so glad that the commissioning was able to be done before January 20, 2009.

This was a very special Bush family ceremony.

GHWB: born June 12, 1924 - a Carrier pilot before he was twenty years old!

The Captain of CVN 77 stated that pilot Bush flew 58 combat missions. The cspan crawl stated that he flew “several” missions! The staff of cspan responsible for wriing the crawl messages continue their mission of insulting anything Republican-related. They must all be totally devoted to their prime viewers - the radical leftist callers, and the cable companies who pay the bills.

Carter’s Navel career was on Submarines.

Last line of story - wapo is getting really sloppy....

"The aircraft carrier will be the 10th and final Nimitz-class sub and the ninth in the Navy's fleet."

Yeah, the sub part is pretty funny. But the 10th Nimitz and ninth in the fleet is technically accurate. At any given time one of the Nimitz class is laid up for a 3+ year RCOH (Refueling, Comprehensive OverHaul) and out of service (although not out of commission). Right now the RCOH deck is Vinson, although she's at the tail end of her rebuild.

I can’t stand to think of a USS Clinton.

It will have a special room where the ship's captain can use a cuban cigar on the selected sailorette.

All clothing will be burned prior to leaving the room.

PS : In the new Navy, a sailorette can be either male, female or uncertain.

Clinton and Obama will get carriers. The last three carriers have been Republicans - Reagan, Bush, and the soon-to-be-built Gerald Ford. My prediction is that the next four will be the John F. Kennedy(II), the William J. Clinton, the Brarack H. Obama, and the new Enterprise will be in the mix somewhere because they've gotta keep all the Star Trek fans happy.

Unfortunately, you may be right. On the exact SAME DAY that the USS GHW BUSH was commisioned, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, MA changed the name of their Training ship from "ENTERPRISE" to "KENNEDY". Tell me that that was not politically motivated... What next, State University of NY Maritime College training ship renamed "CLINTON"?

Nice picture, except that the BUSH has never had sea trials or been underway under her own power.
