Former President George H. W. Bush will be honored for his military career when the U.S. Navy commissions its new aircraft carrier Saturday at Naval Station Norfolk.
The president's son, President Bush, will speak as the Navy commissions the 1,092-foot CVN-77, which will be named the USS George H.W. Bush.
"The president is honored to participate in the commissioning of the USS George H.W. Bush both as the commander in chief and as a proud son," White House spokesman Carlton F. Carroll told The Washington Times.
On Friday, workers finished the last details on the nuclear-powered carrier, which towers 20 stories above the waterline and has a flight deck width of 252 feet. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the 11 a.m. event Saturday, according to Navy officials.

"The aircraft carrier will be the 10th and final Nimitz-class sub and the ninth in the Navy's fleet."

I wasn't crazy about President Bush 41, but he was one heck of an Navel Aviator, and certainly deserves this honor.

LOL, you're thinking of JFK, who certainly was a 'navel aviator', at least when it came to Marilyn Monroe. ;)
I'm waiting to hear that the CVN-77's slogan will be "Wouldn't Be Prudent", lol

I actually object to the abuse of the exception carved out for President Reagan who, although still alive, had given an entirely new meaning to the term "political suicide" with his farewell letter announcing his Alzheimer's Disease diagnosis. Now we are to take it as routine that a son names a capital ship after his yet-living father. It really isn't cricket, you know . . .

Jimminy Karter got a submarine. /Hah! Clinton and Obama will get carriers. The last three carriers have been Republicans - Reagan, Bush, and the soon-to-be-built Gerald Ford. My prediction is that the next four will be the John F. Kennedy(II), the William J. Clinton, the Brarack H. Obama, and the new Enterprise will be in the mix somewhere because they've gotta keep all the Star Trek fans happy.

Just to tweak Zero's nose:
Two Bushes set to commission unfinished carrier The Navy is rushing to commission its newest aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, while its namesake's son is still commander-in-chief. In an unusual move, the early January commissioning ceremony will take place before the Navy has accepted delivery of the ship or conducted sea trials. The Nimitz-class carrier, built by Northrop Grumman Corp. at its Newport News, Va., shipyard, is rated at 97% complete.

Just to tweak Zero's nose I doubt it's a tweak, just a courtesy. Why wouldn't Junior as commander in chief want to preside of the commissioning of a carrier named for his father?
Besides, the Navy isn't stupid. Obama holds the purse strings for the next 4 years. You don't tweak the man with the money.

Bush can be a problematic last name if you want to get a carrier named after you.
Oh well. At least his name wasn’t “Target” or “Relic.”
