Willie Brown: Feinstein establishes her turf

Dianne Feinstein is certainly on her game. In the past few days, she's given Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid a very public lesson in law and President-elect Barack Obama an equally public lesson in political manners.

I told her as much when she called me to make sure I was joining her in her box at Obama's swearing-in Jan. 20. She was in good spirits, and with good reason.

Her shot at Obama for leaking the name of Leon Panetta as the new CIA chief without giving her a call first was completely appropriate.

The leak was an egregious act, one that both Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden quickly acknowledged.

Her move may have upset California Democrats who adore Panetta, a former congressman from the Monterey area and Bill Clinton's ex-chief of staff. But as incoming chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, it was imperative that Feinstein establish her turf quickly - even with a friendly new administration.

Like it or not, she was also right in her appraisal that Panetta has absolutely no connection to the intelligence field.

It was plain from the get-go, however, that Feinstein would work something out with the Obama people. Panetta is just too popular with liberals for her to stand in the way of his appointment. She just made her point and moved on.

Then came her call for the seating of former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to the U.S. Senate.

As the outgoing chair of the Rules Committee, Feinstein took a look at the law when it comes to replacing a senator who vacates his seat, as Obama did after he was elected.

Really, it doesn’t take too many brains to state the obvious as she’s done this past week. Still, it does go a long way to show how F’n dense Dirty Harry and Bambi are.

She’s the Larry King of politics - never has someone gone so far in that realm based on so little.

Bring back, Evelyn Wang!

I wonder if Willie lies on his bed at night and stares at himself in his ceiling mirrors wearing his best suit?

Before Looter Guy, there was Willie the Shuffler, he shuffled from gig to gig and never wore the same suit twice.
