WASHINGTON — A national safety group is advocating a total ban on cell phone use while driving, saying the practice is clearly dangerous and leads to fatalities.

States should ban drivers from using hand-held and hands-free cell phones, and businesses should prohibit employees from using cell phones while driving on the job, the National Safety Council says in a new campaign.

I think that for safety sake, all distractions while driving should be banned. No reading maps or newspapers. No eating or drinking while driving. No radios allowed in cars. No passengers allowed to talk to the driver: To ensure safety, the passengers need to be in the trunk.

And no pretty girls allowed out on the streets.

I would love to see them try and ban radios in cars...that would be worth the price of admission.

What about babies in car seats. I mean anyone with a crying baby that they can not reach because they have to be in the back seat knows thats a real distraction. Oh, wait then there is the five years old who starts yelling I have to go to the bathroom - now. (As a side note they always have to go - now).

Funny thing...I fly the Canadian flag on FR, and Old Glory up here at home! God Bless those who "get it", those who fight for freedom and stand up to terrorists. I will never forget September 11th. In my heart I became "American" that day.

Bless you and Thank you Judy. Hope all is well with you.

I’ve been hit twice by people on phones totally not paying attention. I sympathize to a degree.

I have had so many close calls with 4 wheelers yakking on cell phones over the last several years that I would not be able to count them all up.

My solution?

I got a job that is in a place that I can walk to if I had to. I drive less than 3000 miles a year, and I have spent less than a single weeks pay on gasoline over the last few years.

People driving cars while yakking are a menace.

Personally, I’d rather see them banned in restaurants, stores, lines at the post office....most public places for that matter.

Well that’s cause our law hasn’t come into effect quite yet, they’ve passed it but it won’t take effect until later this year. Way to pay attention.

I have to say that it is a good idea, as much as I don’t like government telling us how to live.

I don’t know where to draw the line, but cell phones are far more distracting than radios, etc. I have almost been wiped out by someone yapping away on a cell phone whilst barrelling through a stop sign.

I guess in a perfect world we would all abstain from any activity that puts our good driving skills at risk, including eating and drinking hot coffee and putting on make-up, etc.

You have to decide whether personal safety is more important to you than personal freedom. If you agitate for this new law, you are in effect advocating ultimately the enforcement of your will upon others at the point of a gun. If you vote for this law or agitate for this law you are adding another layer of regulation that will empower the Police who are imperfect men to make primary traffic stops and infringe upon the day to day activities of free men. Every time elected officials, bureaucrats or by popular referendum the majority decide to impose their will on others they do so with the implicit threat of deadly force. By that I mean the Police carry weapons and will use said weapons on the citizen that tries to resist the enforcement of a law.

Police are us. We are all imperfect beings. To empower an imperfect being to confront another imperfect being is a tricky thing. You empower government at great peril. Be very very careful law and order types... “Their ought to be ja law”. A more foolish thing was never said and represents an audacious level of self absorption and self righteousness. Shame on me for ever thinking that... Shame on you for saying it (almost) here.

No passengers allowed to talk to the driver

Yes, talking passengers can keep you awake on those long drives. And we all know how important sleep is for safe driving.

Are you sure? I admit I don’t pay that much attention because I don’t watch Canadian news very often. Everyone at work was saying it was in effect and I had no cause to doubt them. Think I’ll check it out tomorrow.

Several times crossing the street on a green light, have
almost been hit more than once by drivers going through red lights talking on cell phones.

If I was advising a company on risk issues, I would advise them to at least ban hand held cell phones while driving on company business. Even if it isn’t a contributing factor, you know a plaintiff’s attorney will try to hang it around your neck even if their client caused the wreck.
