MONTPELIER, Vt. -- U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is objecting to wording accompanying a portrait of President George Bush installed at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington.

Sanders, a strong opponent of the Iraq war, has asked the Smithsonian to rewrite the text that says Bush's two terms in office were "marked by a series of catastrophic event" including the "the attacks on September 11, 2001, that led to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq."

I agree, the word "event" should be edited to "events".

Bernie will probably get some of what he wants. The Smithsonian has exhibited odd loyalties in past years.

museum officials were preparing a response to Sanders

I think FReepers may be able to assist in this task...

Well, then the Smithsonian will have to alter the text that is on the label accompanying the bust of Margaret Sanger that is located in the National Portrait Gallery. I about threw up when I saw it!

I discovered last week that a good friend holds ingrained views (ie, never to be dissuaded) that the REAL reason George Bush invaded Iraq was to avenge Saddam's assassination attempt on his father

This is a manifestation of BDS, there is no known cure...mild strains of this type of thinking (doubts) have been known to infect an entire society

Loved ones or others who must have contact with BDS sufferers should simply recognize that their mental frameworkw results from an illness that cannot be cured. though zerO’s inauguration may bring some temporary joy and relief

I wonder how many American Servicemen died due to Mr. Bernie Sanders opposition to the Iraq war.

He should be tried for treason. If convicted let the punishment for treason be given to him quickly on the mall in front of the Smithsonian.

The Smithsonian came up with its own version of WW II, as I recall. Seems as though it was our fault.

Those views in support of zero are cult like views and not amenable to reason, science or logic.

In recent years the Smithsonian has taken on a far left bent on all kinds of issues throughout its museums, reflecting typical ultra-left mindsets to put America in a bad light. A few examples:

- The Enola Gay was a criminal tool used against poor innocent Japanese.

- The US was running concentration camps for Japanese (partly true, but we were also saving the world).

- The US committed genocide in its treatment of Indians.

It was overtaken by elitists from academia who put their cronies in while at the same time living large off taxpayer money.

It may be time to take up a “slap ‘em in the mouth” policy toward these foul and out of control SOB’s that think they can spout anything. We can make it a national policy...SLAP THEM IN THE MOUTH.

It’s not different that the pie in the face that the out of control lefties chose as their uncivil weapon of choice.

Sanders says the notion that the terrorist attacks were linked to or led to the Iraq war has been widely debunked.

And yet this strange causality exists that there have been no attacks on US soil since 9/11.

Sanders should go back to doing what he does best - sniffing Barney Frank's hindquarters.

Can’t the folks assume some grace and dignity and just let Mr. Bush go?

This kind of behavior and (stand by for their favorite word) hubris speaks more of them than GWB.

In recent years the Smithsonian has taken on a far left bent on all kinds of issues throughout its museums, reflecting typical ultra-left mindsets to put America in a bad light.

Late 80s early 90s I went. They had signs up at some of the natural history exhibits that had a circled red slash over the word 'Mankind'. Then in little letters under the slash sign was the explanation "Stamp out sexism in science".

Official Smithsonian signs. I kid you not.

Don't know if they are still there or not. Or if they just got rid of all the references to "Mankind" and dumped the slash signs.

The Smithsonian thanks Senator Sanders for his interest in the display.

We respectfully submit that if he want's to write text for displays, he can quit his Senate seat and apply for a job at the Smithsonian.

Until he lands that position our staff will continue to fill that need.

Mr. Sanders,

You don’t tell us how to run a museum, and we won’t tell you how to enslave a populace, destroy productivity and steal freedoms.

Respectfully yours,

The Smithsonian

I think Bernie is having trouble with the idea of cause and effect. Just because the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan came AFTER 9/11, doesn't mean that they were both conducted because BOTH countries were tied to 9/11.

The war in Afghanistan came first, because it was clear that Osama bin Laden, the man who directed the attacks, was hiding there. So it WAS directly tied to the 9/11 attacks.

As far as Iraq was concerned, President Bush NEVER accused Sadaam Hussein of being connected to the 9/11 attacks. It was the MSM that accused the President of connecting them. The President was clear about the war in Iraq. Sadaam was pursuing weapons of mass destruction, and, in fact, had already used them on his own people. And it was also clear that he was supportive of terrorism, as shown by his monetary support of families of suicide bombers in Israel. President Bush also tied the war on Iraq with Iraq's not adhering to the UN decisions that followed the first Gulf War, specifically the sale of oil. That was made clear by the uncovering of the Oil for Food scandals tied to the UN.

Bush's two terms in office were "marked by a series of catastrophic event" including the "the attacks on September 11, 2001, that led to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq."

Technically, that statement is true.

Without the 9/11 attacks, the war in Afghanistan would not have occurred.

And, if the removal of the Taliban hadn't been so successful in the beginning, we wouldn't have gone into Iraq.

Bush and his advisers saw a chance to remove Saddam while the getting was good and they went and got Saddam.

Without 9/11, the Taliban and Saddam would still be in power in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bernie can't stand the successes, even if on technicalities.

Sanders says the notion that the terrorist attacks were linked to or led to the Iraq war has been widely debunked.

The one that makes me laugh the most was the Bush Lied People Died slander. Among some statements that were declared lies was the one the President made in reference to Saddam seeking yellow cake from Niger.

This comment, based upon British intelligence reports, led to the entire Plame outing, Scooter Libby conviction affair. What a travesty that led to the destruction of Libby's life.

Who lied? The yellow cake that the President was talking about was shipped to us from Iraq and is now being processed into nuclear fuel for Canadian Candu reactors! We will use it to generate electricity!
America you are being destroyed by the fifth column educated to first blame their homeland and side with the enemy. Good luck, but please remember that you will take down a whole bunch of countries with you. You want to know what led to 9/11 just connect the dots during Clinton's administration. I saw in 1998 your destroyed embassy in Kenya!
