Here are a couple of reasons why throwing your support behind Micahel Steele is FAR more important than wasting another moment explaining why Chip Saltsman didn't "do anything wrong."
Is he clean? Is he articulate?
Disagree. He certainly has been making fullthroated RINO noises of late.
And why do we want to “attract independents and moderates” anyway? That’s what caused the defeat in the last election.
Despite his name, I don’t think he owns any guns.
I've heard he is not a 2nd Amendment supporter... If true, f'em!
I would not support him in any role in a decent party rooted in conservative principles. The following quote from Steele is a deal breaker:
“Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you’re going hunting? That’s overkill. But I don’t think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But what’s the point of passing gun laws if we’re not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, that’s where you need to start. We’ve got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it’s about how we enforce the law.

He is against a total ban, apparently leaving the option of some kind of ban of firearms. Screw him and all the other elitist Beltway Looter Bandits.
Ummm... The 'RATS controlled congress before Nov. 4th. Is your thesis that the independents and moderates were gravitating toward the GOP?
Most people of this ilk thought they were voting for another MLK. Nothing was going to dissuade them from pulling the lever for Zer0.
I would dispute the word ‘handily’ but I agree that the election would have been much closer without the economic collapse.
See my post in #9.
He is a grabber.
Steele stabbed Andy Harris of Maryland in the back to support the RINO Gilcrest in the race for Maryland's 1st District. Even Ehrlich supported Harris but then again Steele did say:
"We have to elect moderates in the party"
Steele to CBNs David Brody.
Is that who we want running the Republican party?

McCain may have had a chance of winning because conservatives were holding their nose (hard). I know I was. I would only vote for him if the Dem was Mugabe and Obama is.
The “economic collapse” was engineered by Soros and his short buddies Paulson (not Henry) and Flowers plus others. This was helped by Schumer bashing Indy Mac. Set in motion years before with CRAs, Barney Frank, Fannie & Freddie bustout engineered by Emannuel & Gorelnic plus Raines and others, plus “genius” Rubin at Citi.
Bush also has done little in office since 2006. He should have had Chris Cox at SEC reinstate the uptick rule on shorting but the GOp had no clue. ron paul did and probably Romney and maybe Fred.
Notice that he does not mention any right of self-defense or the right to carry concealed.
Ken Blackwell is a much better choice.
McCain lost because Republicans hate his guts.
It’s like watching the same car crash over and over and over again. This car just happens to be brown.
Actually, McCain lost precisely because he was a RINO, specifically on the economic collapse, he reminded everyone of his RINO colors and acted like a RINO. If he played the Conservative hand when 80% of the public was against the Wall Street bailout, he may have won.
Blackwell is the only one actually discussing reclaiming the Conservative nature of our party instead of ‘reaching out’.
I think you’re whistling past the graveyard.
Hope you’re right and I’m wrong, but I don’t think I’m wrong.
And why do we want to attract independents and moderates anyway? Thats what caused the defeat in the last election.
Attracting independents and moderates caused the defeat in the last election? Doesn’t that sort of defy logic? Attracting additional voters of any ilk increases the vote count.
What am I missing? The GOP attracted moderates and independents and lost. Would that not suggest that the GOP would have lost even bigger without attracting independents and moderates?
The so-called base, by itself, does not command the numbers to win without others joining in. Some of those folks are moderates and independents. Seems counter productive to weed them out.
Independents and moderates nominated John McCain. We need a conservative in the mode of Haley Barbour, and his name is Katon Dawson.
No. He supports affirmative action.
Quite correct. A brown non-descript minivan, to be precise.
What you are missing is that “independents and moderates” and the Rockefeller Republicans put Juan McCain in place. We had better candidates than him.
I sincerely hope your analysis is correct.
I fear it is not.
As opposed to weeding out the base?
Who said anything about weeding out the base? If the base cannot cope with folks who don’t think just like them, they will be forever an also-ran party.
How many people, not of the base, voted for Ronald Reagan? Quite a lot. Some were moderates and independents.
You lose the base you lose period. If you like to call the Clinton socialists “independent and moderate” so be it but you’re only driving the GOP left and the democrats further left.
Agreed. Steele can get elected in Maryland. That should tell you all you need to know about him.
I originally was thinking of Steel being I am in Maryland and he helped us win the governorship. But his recent statements about “reaching out” have me concerned. Do we continue to reach out by promoting Jack Kemps and McCain’s approach to apologize for own party (being conservative and racist) and then take liberal positions to make up for it? Only specific wedge issues have a hope with certain groups.
I know Steel has got national conservative attention from Hannity’s show, but I now don’t trust Hannity for anything anymore. His (Hannity) pro-Bush, pro-UAW positions, basically big government, big deficit, near-socialist positions makre him look pathetic going after Obama on his stimulus package(even Colmes couldnt take it). Hannity was saying last night he was at White House the other day and repeated some dribble that GWB fed him. It was non-sense about his principles.
What about Ken Blackwell?
RE :”Steele can get elected in Maryland. That should tell you all you need to know about him.”
Sorry I live in MD and he lost big as Senator 2006, couldnt get the AA vote. He did help Gov Erhlich the first election but left him hanging in 2006 just to lose two elections that year(Gov and Senate).
Steele didn’t do too well in Maryland when he ran for the Senate. He lost to a cardboard cutout old white guy who is about as interesting as snow on the TV. That despite an incumbent Governor that had a 65% approval rating (but still lost)!!!
I think that there are a lot of people who I would refer to as independents and moderates, but not Clinton socialists.
But if I read you correctly, the base is lost the moment the base does not get its way, unless they get candidates who they have sanctioned.
If you only want the ideologically pure, you can be quite self satisfied, and out of power. JMO.
If there is one major problem that the conservative has it does not recognize who the real enemy to America is. It is NOT McCain, Steele or Hagel. It is Obama. It’s that simple. And along with that the conservatives, IMHO, often choose not to coalesce around one candidate but spread their loyalties among two or three so as to allow RINO’s like McCain to come up the middle. Look I support Sarah Palin. But for the future of America I would rather the conservatives of America shun Sarah if it would mean that you would coalesce around another conservative.
“......hes African American.....”
Thats not a deal maker for me.
I have seen what 98% of the blacks want for our country..... and I am not the least bit interested in giving them what they want.
No, I am really not a racist and I refuse to allow anyone to turn me into one, but I am sick of this skin color fad and I actually don’t think that it’s a bad thing to be white, either.
Besides, I think he’s a gun grabber.
EXACTLY! and if people are so worried about being “diverse” well Blackwell is also that!
Guess that can happen when you are a “moderate”. Hard to build a reliable base. But if he was conservative, he wouldn’t even be a player in Maryland.
If you want a gun grabber.
Steele wants to ban semi-automatic firearms, aka "assault weapons".
He also can't grasp the simple fact that the Second Amendment isn't about hunting.
Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons?
A: Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you're going hunting? That's overkill. But I don't think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But what's the point of passing gun laws if we're not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, that's where you need to start. We've got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it's about how we enforce the law.
