~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota
Minot Air Force Base (Minot AFB) (IATA: MIB, ICAO: KMIB, FAA LID: MIB) is a U.S. Air Force installation in Ward County, North Dakota, 13 miles north of the city of Minot.
Minot AFB is the home of two major wings: the 5th Bomb Wing of the Air Combat Command (ACC), and 91st Missile Wing of the Air Force Space Command (AFSPC).
Originally opened in 1957 as an Air Defense Command (ADC) base, it became a major Strategic Air Command (SAC) base in the early 1960s, with both nuclear missiles and bombers (& tankers). When SAC was inactivated in 1992, the nuclear mission of the base was divided between the two present commands.
Several Minot businessmen and citizens donated approximately $50,000 to buy the first portions of land for the base. The ground breaking took place July 12, 1955, and construction started within a year. The Air Force accepted the bases first building Jan. 10, 1957.
Air Defense Commands 32nd Fighter Group activated at Minot on Feb. 7, 1957, with the Air Force officially taking occupancy of the base eight days later. In mid-1958, Air Defense Command established the need for a Semi-Automatic Ground Environment, or SAGE, sector at Minot. Activated in June 1961, the blast-resistant concrete building processed air surveillance information and sent the data to Air Defense Command units.
In September 1958, the 4136th Strategic Wing became Strategic Air Commands first permanent unit assigned here. The wings 906th Air Refueling Squadron activated here in March 1959 to provide air refueling support to northern defense operations units.
Learn More About The History Of Minot Air Force Base Here!
Minot Air Force Base is home to the 5th Bomb Wing and its squadron of B-52H Stratofortress bombers. The bomb wing serves as the base's host unit in charge of maintaining the base's day-to-day activities in addition to its combat mission. Minot AFB is also home to the 91st Missile Wing and its fleet of Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles and UH-1N helicopters. Known by its nickname, the Warbirds, the 5th Bomb Wing is part of Air Combat Command as well as the host wing at Minot Air Force Base, N.D. The bomb wing and its fleet of B-52H Stratofortress bombers serve as part of the Air Force's conventional and strategic combat force. The men and women of the wing are capable of flying anywhere around the world and delivering a wide range of precision-guided munitions.
Minot Air Force Base is home to the 91st Missile Wing - one of the Air Force's three operational intercontinental ballistic missile units. The missile wing, whose members are known as the Rough Riders, are responsible for defending the United States by maintaining a fleet of 150 Minuteman III missiles located in underground launch facilities scattered across the northwest part of the state. The wing's missile complex stretches over 8,500 square miles -- approximately the same size as Massachusetts.
Learn More About Minot Air Force Base Here!
The Dakota Territory Air Museum was founded in June of 1986 with the incorporators' dream and desire to provide the most comprehensive aviation facility in the state and region.
Plans were laid early that the museum would not only be a place to display famous military and vintage aircraft, but would be a place in every way dedicated to telling and showing the rich and varied story of our region's aviation history. In the short time since the museum's dedication, the members have built a solid foundation, establishing a working museum with aircraft, restoration projects and a role in the region's promotion of aviation activities and air shows.

Hi!Kathy and thanks for the trip to Minot AFB. Though I served in SAC I was really happy that I was not assigned there.
I can’t imagine what winter would be like for a canine trooper there.Yikes.

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION
The light of God surround you The love of God enfold you The power of God protect you The presence of God watch over you Wherever you are, God is, And all is well. Amen.
BLESS THIS HOUSE Bless this house O Lord we pray; Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout, Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall, Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright, Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there, with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within, keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we May dwell O Lord with thee.

I was there also in the 5th bomb wing working on the B-52H 1970-1972.
My oldest daughter was born there in the local hospital.
Good hunting and fishing up there. North Dakota is the duck capital of US and 3rd nuclear power after US and Russia.

The Bibles School Of Prayer
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit. Job 7:11
To call God and us unequal partners is a laughable understatement. And yet by inviting us to do kingdom work on earth, God has indeed set up a kind of odd-couple alliance. God delegates work to human beings so that we do history together, so to speak. Clearly, the partnership has one dominant partnersomething like an alliance between Microsoft and a high school programmer.
We know well what happens when human beings form unequal alliances: the dominant partner tends to throw his weight around and the subordinate mostly keeps quiet. But God, who has no reason to be threatened by us, invites a steady and honest flow of communication.
I sometimes wonder why God places such a high value on honesty in our prayers, even to the extent of enduring unjust outbursts. I am startled to see how many biblical prayers seem ill-tempered. Jeremiah griped about unfairness (20:7-10); Habakkuk accused God of deafness (1:2); Job conceded, What profit do we have if we pray to Him? (21:15). The Bible teaches us to pray with blistering honesty.
God wants us to come to Him with our complaints. If we march through life pretending to smile while inside we bleed, we dishonor the relationship.
Give Him each perplexing problem,
All your needs to Him make known;
Bring to Him your daily burdens
Never carry them alone! Adams

Yes Kathy that was my job on base.Patrolling the Perimeter of the flight line and weapon storage areas.
It was a lonely job at time and when bad weather came in that made it worse.But there were a lot of great things I experienced as a dog handler and don't regret it a bit.

I was stationed at Minot AFB from 1970 - 73. I was the Base Tactical Communication Officer assigned to th 5th Bomb Wing. Being a historian I was interested in and researched the decal that the 23rd bomb Squadron wore with pride.

I helped update the history of this magnificent organization. It was surprising that this unit of bombers had actually been used in peacetime to save civilians!
To quote from the history I helped write
"MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. -- The 23rd Bomb Squadron patch displays bombs being dropped on a volcano commemorating a lava-bombing mission Dec. 27, 1935. When the Mauna Loa volcano on the island of Hawaii erupted, threatening the city of Hilo, six Keystone B-6 bombers from the 23rd BS used precision bombing tactics to drop twenty bombs in the path of the volcanos lava flow to save the city of Hilo by diverting the lava away from the city.
