Obama-mad Canadians bound for Capitol Hill
Globe and Mail ^ | January 13, 2009 | KATE HAMMER

When Toronto bookstore owner Itah Sadu decided she was going to attend Barack Obama's inauguration in Washington, she asked her friends if they wanted to come.

So many said yes she ended up chartering a bus.

Their inauguration-bound vehicle seats 35, and will be full when it leaves Yorkdale Mall on Monday.

Ms. Sadu, 47, hasn't planned any entertainment for the 10-hour trip, so as not to interrupt spontaneous expressions of inaugural glee.

"A number of the people that I'm going with are such enthusiastic people that they'll just burst into song," she said.

They should have carpooled.

Obama can't help but throw people under the bus.

Now that we’ve did it, isn’t the pressure on Canada, France, and all the other progressive countries to elect a Prime Minister who is a minority in the country?

Sooner or later, the whole “First African-American President.....” stuff is going to end.

It can’t be over too soon, imo.

People make such a big deal out of it, as if prior to November, 2008 it wasn’t possible.

The wish has been granted, now let’s see the reality.

They’re going to be sorely disappointed when they arrive in DC and find the whole city locked down with no where to go.

No, they will be ushered to the front of the stage and sing "We Are The World" with Obambi.

Then we will have to listen to all the rats and rinos tell us how we should be more like the Canadians!

“They’re going to be sorely disappointed when they arrive in DC and find the whole city locked down with no where to go”.

...AND that they’re one of only 35 buses. The original prediction was 5,000. The new and improved prediction is 35. Close. ~sarc.

"Mr. Lewis worked on the Obama campaign and helped to recruit more than 25 Canadians to canvass battlegrounds such as Fort Worth, Tex., and Charlotte, N.C."

Is this legal?
Not that it would matter in this cess-pit of an election;but can foreign nationals legally be brought in to the USA to work Federal election campaigns?

Probably illegal as most countries have laws against non-resident foreigners participating in campaigns. Enforcement is rare, though- a few years ago Michael Moore gave a speech supporting the Liberal Party of Canada during a campaign here but he was never charged.

Heck, if they had arrested him they would have had to feed that fat SOB.

Probably a factor in their turning their heads.

On Canadians working in an election for the U.S. Presidency.

Is this legal?

I should think that it is. If one carries this to another level and not using reductio absurdum (something like that), imagine that down the track, large numbers of non-American citizens and not taxpayers participate. The whole structure of a democracy could be subverted. Commonsense tells anyone this.

I am positive the Founding Fathers would have called for immediate deportation- or if feeling charitable, just desist. Two things that I hope- as an outsider who wishes all things good for the USA, I hope two things will happen NEXT time.

(1)A independent verification of ANY person's elegibility, who gets on the ballot for the Presidency.
(2) The restriction on foreign money and foreign participation in the affairs of electoral matters in the USA.

The same Canadians who are bound by President-elect Obama's charisma, would scream for the Mounties, if Americans came en bloc to Canada to support Stephen Harper next time up. Bring up the war of 1812 and all (chuckle).

AFAIK, there's nothing illegal about non-citizens working for campaigns in the US- I worked as a volunteer for several GOP campaigns back before my US naturalization. A campaign isn't the Federal government, so there is no ban on non-citizens working for it. The only issue I can think of is if the campaign was paying people who did not have the right to legally work in the US.

I don't know how US law works, but in Canada what you did was legal. Our Elections Act allows foreign citizens to participate in campaigns if they are legal residents here. It is illegal for someone who is neither a citizen nor a resident to campaign for candidates here.

There’s is no way they will allow themselves to think that they’re dissatisfied. It’ll be the same denial that makes people stay in toxic marriages, not wanting to admit that they made a mistake.
