France cemented its status as Europe's fertility champion on Tuesday when fresh statistics showed women are having on average more than two children each, an increase from last year's birth rate.
The second most populous country in the European Union after Germany, France began 2009 with 64.3 million inhabitants, 366,500 more than in 2008, according to the national statistics agency INSEE.
While there are fewer women of child-bearing age in France, the birth rate has continued to climb, with 2.02 children on average born to every woman in 2008, up from 1.98 in 2007.
Last year, more than 800,000 babies were born in France, the highest number in three decades, confirming the success of the country's family-friendly policies.
State-provided child care and family support payments are well-established while labour laws provide for generous maternity and parental leaves, encouraging young couples to become parents.
The average European birth rate is 1.5 children, with France and Ireland at the top of the fertility list.
Like in many other western countries, French women are having babies later in life, starting usually at age 30, nearly two years later than in the 1980s.
Birth rates are up in the 30-40 age group and more than one in five babies were born last year to a woman over the age of 35. In 1998, older women accounted for only 16.5 percent of births.
Since 2006, more babies are born out of wedlock in France and the trend is continuing. Some 52 percent of newborns were born to unmarried couples in 2008, a full 10 percent more than in 1998.
Longevity in France remains high with men living on average until the ripe old age of 77.5 while women usually make it to their 84th birthday.

It ain't a pretty picture.
Only because France has the highest population of Muslims.
It’s not Muslims, they are only 7% of the population.
How many of these plenteous babes are born to Muslim couples?
Just turn the Eiffel Tower into Europe's tallest minaret.
that was my first thought.
Did I miss the Muslim reference in the article?
It’s nonchalance, not vanity, that makes French women sexy
Seven percent of 64.5 million is, what, about 4.5 million. They can produce an awful lot of those 800,000 babies.
Muzzies breed like rabbits!
It is not readily knowable what percentage of all residents of France are Muslim, or how old they are. My understanding is that the Muslim residents of France are younger on average than the others and that they have more children than the average and start having children younger. Thus their contribution to present and near-future population growth may be much greater then you might expect just from the 7% figure.
That's more than enough to cause a demographic, cultural, moral and intelligence shift in the population...
America is a startling example of the shift possible from a minority of only 12%,
That was my question; are they actual Froggies, or are the future Jihadies?
In my opinion, the ugliest most unattractive women I have EVER seen were in from France and the UK. I’m not saying all are like this.. but the ugliest ones, in my opinion, were encountered in these two countries.
“the birth rate has continued to climb, with 2.02 children on average born to every woman in 2008, up from 1.98 in 2007.”
Pardon me, but does that mean that every French womann, on average, is having 2 or more babies per year?
"More are on the way. Today, the Muslim birth rate in Europe is three times higher than the non-Muslim one. If current trends continue, the Muslim population of Europe will nearly double by 2015, while the non-Muslim population will shrink by 3.5 percent."
"A parallel process of Muslim enfranchisement is accompanying this population surge. Nearly half of the 5 million to 7 million Muslims in France are already French citizens.
Which country has the healthiest fertility rate? France. Which country has the most Muslims? France. Which country has the second healthiest fertility rate on the western end of the Continent? Denmark. Which country has the second largest proportion of Muslims? Denmark. Get the picture?
Yes, the replacement level for a first world country is 2.07 to be exact. Replacement is higher than 2.07 for countries with high death rates.
UK women are a bit plain looking but not Frenchwomen.
France is finished!
The UK, really? London had the highest concentration of good looking women I’ve ever seen.
I was in France twice last year for a week a piece. Nice to see I’ve still got the power...
There’s also lots of Moslem women in France...
Way to Go France! Keep going—its the only way to save western Civilization! Our salvation is in the bedroom! Now Germany and England need to start breeding like crazy!
I suggest all reading Mark Steyn’s book “America Alone.” All the European birthrates are there and the French birthrate is secondary to Muslims.
Likely not French, just ewts.
I heard somewhere it is illegal to name a baby something that isn’t on the French govt list. Or it used to be. (I read a lot more history than current events.)
No, it means the average woman is have 2.02 children during her childbearing years. That number is extrapolated from the birth rate in any given year.
If you start with a population of 93 elephants and 7 rabbits, after two years, the place will be crawling with rabbits.
Where are their names and phone numbers? ;?
That’s still 4.5M French Muslims, or Muslims living in France. I’m thinking they account for a disproportionate % of the new borns.
Looks like she should be on Fox News
Southern Spaniards, Catalans, Italians from all regions, Poles, and even Hungarians are far more attractive than zee French women.
Besides, in addition to being a-s ugly, most Englishwomen are rude, feministic, and skanky. Very ugly, inside and out.
they are instead Polish...:D
Actually, I hate to burst the bubble, but I have been looking, and although I cannot find the list, it is a requirement in France to choose a baby name from an approved list. So, the most popular names most likely indicate...nothing.
I dunno, if it is a double post or not. But again, while I cannot find the list, I have read at numerous sites that the French have an approved list of names for children (I believe around 150 in number), so the propensity of those top ten names very likely means nothing.
That is correct. The names must be on the list so as to not allow children to make fun of. I wonder how many of those Maries and such are bearing male Muslim middle names from their fathers. Also, if they have more than one wife, they may be multiplying far faster than people are willing to admit. I have read articles that say many, many Native French are having no children, as well as friends who were living there who gave anecdotal evidence. It would be interesting to see what the growth rate of Muslims has been, and over just what period of time...
Birth rate of France: 2.02
Birth rate of Algeria, where the largest number of French Muslims are from: 1.82
Birth rate of Tunisia: 1.73
can you say Rachida Dati?
