Barr Supports Closure of Guantanamo Prison
Endorses Obama Proposal

Former Congressman Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party's 2008 nominee for president, issued a statement Wednesday morning applauding President-elect Obama’s reported plan to close the controversial military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where many suspected terrorists have been held, often without hearings, since shortly after 9/11.

“If there are detainees there as to whom the government has evidence they pose a serious danger to the United States, then house them at the Super Max federal prison in Florence, Colorado and prosecute them. If there is no such evidence as to other detainees, then they should be returned to the countries from which or in which they were picked up,” Barr declared.

“Continuing to detain people indefinitely without affording them the most basic of due process, and fighting the courts endlessly on such matters, runs counter to our laws, our Constitution, and international law,” noted Barr.

Barr also criticized Vice President Cheney’s recent glib comments that unless a Member of Congress is willing to accept having the Guantanamo detainees deposited into their district or state, they have no business criticizing the Administration or calling for the prison’s closure, saying Mr. Cheney “misses the point completely. Either we are a nation of laws or we are not.”

Barr, a former Member of Congress (1995-2003), also served previously as a US Attorney and with the Central Intelligence Agency. He was the Libertarian nominee for President in 2008.

Found this little gem today while googling about Barr's procedures in the Clinton's impeachment 10 years ago to compare it to Blago's upcoming impeacment trial.

Hope the 600,000+ "conservatives" who voted for liberal ACLU lawyer Bob Barr to “send a message to the GOP” are real proud of your guy. This creepy pod person claiming to be Bob Barr bears NO resemblance to the conservative Republican Bob Barr who served in Congress, the very Bob Barr who was chopping at the bit to impeach Clinton two years before anyone even heard of Monica. Now he thinks it’s “premature” to accuse Blago of wrong doing after he was caught red handed? If today’s Bob Barr traveled in a time machine back to 1998, $50 says he’d be serving on Clinton’s defense team instead of prosecuting him.

Here's another recent gem from "true conservative" Bob Barr:

Barr Slams Illinois House Impeachment Resolution - Calls Blagojevich Impeachment Premature and Irresponsible

By the way, that's the EXACT headline from the LP website - I didn't alter it.

Boob Barf's voters sent a "message" to the GOP alright. You voted for liberalism and you'll get it. Good riddance to Barr and his RINO supporters.

Frankly, I’m surprised he is able to still get his name in the paper.

Used to like Bob.

He's gone off the reservation since he went over to the "dark side" - the ACLU.

Agreed. Barr used to be a solid across-the-board conservative and was one of my favs. I have an autographed copy of “The Meaning of Is” from Barr.

Bob Barr is dead to me (RIP, 1948-2002). This liberal ACLU mouthpiece currently claiming to be “Bob Barr” has as much in common with the old Bob Barr as Adam Smith has with Karl Marx.

Really sad to see Losertarian Bob Barr throw away everything he worked for his entire career. Talk about flushing your legacy down the toilet.

Wonder if his supporters who voted for this leftist stooge over Palin still claim he’s the “true conservative” and adapting his policies would “move the GOP in the right direction”

Barr has been a hot topic in my neighborhood lately. Many neighbors go to the same church as Barr and since the election they’ve all whispered about secretly wanting to kick him in the shins.

We all recognize he’s went to the darkside, but kicking him at a Sunday Methodist service just doesn’t seem very Christian-like.

Maybe they could do it in the parking lot... /ha

Proving once again — politicians are the biggest pack of whores outside of Nevada...

The time will soon arrive - we’ll have to hang them all.

I take it you live in Barr's old congressional district? The problem is with the "conservatives" who refuse to accept Bob Barr has changed 180 degrees and become a liberal mouthpiece.

There were a number of "conservatives" on FR shrilling for Barr in November and claiming he was the "true conservative" in the race and pointing to his solid pro-life, pro-WOT, anti-illegal alien record in Congress, ignoring the fact that Barr had since renounced all that and begged the libertarians for forgiveness.

Barr got a record number of votes for a Libertarian candidate in at least a decade -- about 200,000 more than the "lifelong libertarian" candidate got in 2004. I don't buy the excuse that Barr got more votes because he was "better known" as a former Congressman. Cynthnia McKinney was just as well known as Barr but she didn't draw nearly the number of disgruntled lefties that Nader did. Barr benefited from disgruntled Republicans. Barr and his gang of "conservative" supporters may have swung North Carolina to Hussein Obama, making it the first time since LBJ that the state has gone RAT (they didn't even vote for fellow southerner Carter in '76!)

The lies that Barr was the "True conservative" in the race need to be exposed now and those Barr supporters need to come to grips with the fact that the LAST thing the GOP needs to do is go in the "direction" Barr has gone. Sarah Palin is 10X more conservative (not to mention more libertarian!) than Barr, and they refused to support her. Their loss.

One more political idiot who is clueless as to the nature of war that we are in.
These people are not crininals. They are enemy combatants ans should under NO CIRCUMSTANCE be housed in any prison containingUS citizens. As to those that Barr claims should be sent back to their Country;s were the is no “evidnce against them (whatever that measn in war) most of the Country;s these dirtbags come from have already refused to allow them back in.......
So what we have is one more politcal hack shooting off his mouth on a subject he is not qualified to speak to.

Barr is just another nutcake like Ron Paul. Once were sane, principles individuals. Now they are raging lunatics who are helping our enemies, the Democrats, and hurting our country, all at the same time and in the name of “civil liberties”.

As one Supreme Court justice once said, “The Constitution is not a suicide pact.”

Barr, if you want to slit your own throat, get one of the guys in Gitmo to do it for you. They are well practiced and would love to decapitate you, and you want to house them in the US. No wonder you are nuts.

Just sent a personal letter to Barr’s press secretary:

Dear Andy,

I would like to thank Congressman Barr for his recent press releases endorsing Obama’s position on Guantanamo Bay terrorists and for denouncing Illinois for impeaching disgraced scumbag Governor Blagojevich. Congressman Barr’s statements have reinforced that I was justified in casting my vote against him in November.

Since that time, Sarah Palin has shown a bold, strong commitment to libertarian-minded conservative principles, while the formerly conservative Barr has shown himself to be little more than a mouthpiece for the liberal ACLU.

Thanks to Congressman Barr’s statements, I have posted them to various conservative forums and have been able to help many Republicans who cast protest votes for Barr realize the error of their ways. They now see that Barr’s election certainly wouldn’t have resulted in a “more conservative” direction for America. Many Barr Republicans now regret their votes, similar to Republicans who voted for Rep. Mark Kirk. Bob Barr was absolutely right that we should not vote for “faux conservatives”, so hopefully Republicans will never again be misled by Bob Barr after he renounced everything he had done in Congress to advance the cause of conservativism.

However, it is unfortunate, that Bob Barr is now working to undo his life’s work in politics and in the private sector of fighting illegal immigration, illegal drug trafficking, and terrorism. I strongly advice Congressman Barr to seek psychological help since it is clear that he is no longer sane after losing his bid for re-election to Congress. It’s quite tragic to see this once decent and honorable man flush his life’s legacy down the toilet. I have no doubt that if today’s Bob Barr were transported back in time to 1999, he’d be working for Clinton’s defense team rather than prosecuting him.

In short, rest assured that I will never again support Bob Barr and I am working vigilantly to ensure other Republicans see what a left-wing nut he has become so that they will no longer support him either. If Bob Barr wants to ensure he will never again hold office or enjoy the public trust, he is doing one hell of a job.

Yours sincerely,

[BillyBoy]

Yes, I live in Barr’s old district.

Barr is an opportunist. Period. Always has been, evidently always will be.

But let him not be so stupid to think he garnered libertarian voters in November because of him personally. His numbers appear to be the result of a closeted Rat-Republican and the left’s total devotion to Obama. Nader and McKinney were completely wasting their time and other people’s money.

Why is Barr still in the news and issuing press releases, with his opinions? Will he run for governor of Georgia, in 2010?

I’m not aware of his intentions to run for GA governor. Frankly, that effort would likely go down in flames fast. Other than the east county of Atlanta, and pockets of college campuses, Barr wouldn’t do well at all - regardless of is party affiliation.

If I had to guess, I would think Barr would make an attempt at Isaakson’s Senate seat in 2010.
