Backers of jailed border agents appeal to Bush
Washington Times ^ | January 15, 2009 | Sara A. Carter

Posted on 01/15/2009 7:01:02 AM PST by SwinneySwitch

Monica Ramos and Patty Compean still have hope.

It is the slim hope that President Bush will, in his administration's final hours, commute the sentences of their husbands.

Ignacio "Nacho" Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean, two former Border Patrol agents, were sentenced to 11 and 12 years in prison, respectively, in October 2006 in the nonfatal shooting of a now-convicted Mexican drug smuggler. They have been in federal prison since January 2007.

The convictions of the two men led to an outcry across the nation, and nearly a half-million signatures were collected for a presidential pardon. The notoriety of the case also forced prosecutors with the U.S. attorney's office in the Western District of Texas to explain publicly why the two men were convicted of violating the civil rights of the fleeing suspect.

"Every day I believe that the president will do the right thing," Mrs. Ramos told The Washington Times by phone from her home in Texas. "Our three sons have been devastated by this; there is nothing that can replace the time that has been already lost."

The Bush administration's treatment of Ramos and Compean - Mr. Bush has resisted previous calls - contrasts sharply with its actions toward the Border Patrol's leader. Chief David V. Aguilar, whose tenure has been widely criticized on other grounds besides the shooting case, received a $61,200 merit-award bonus.

At the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, a dozen House members held a news conference to urge Mr. Bush to commute the sentences of the agents before he leaves office Tuesday.

"They were not in the commission of a crime; they were in the commission of defending our borders, and they should have been acknowledged for having done that," said Rep. Louie Gohmert, Texas Republican.

There is good cause for Hope and Change....Thursday,

January 15, 2009 12:48 AM

Please read , act now and pass it along... I talked to Monica Ramos this(yesterday) evening. She is in very good spirits in spite of all the hassles she continues to endure.

There are high "hopes" as the time draws near for a decision by the President to commute the sentences of Ignacio and Jose....Ramos and Compean. I would like to ask for just one more week that you make a call or send an email to increase the exposure of this wrongful decision..this travesty of justice... against two fine border agents and their families. For now, not a time to gripe...

express that Justice for All begins with the pardon/commutation of Ramos and Compean....

express the desire to see these brave border patrol agents pardoned/commuted, home with their families to continue a life so abruptly separated ...

and emphasize the need for greater border security NOW, border security FIRST

Ask for an update on the status, we want a "Change" in their status and we "Hope" a light is seen, then please...express anything else you may desire.

I don’t expect him to pardon these guys, because like all other RINOS, he is more concerned with his favor ability among Democrats, than he is for the rest of his base.

You know your right. My bad here.

What I should have said is that he's not a conservative, and never has been.

But you called me a bitter Conservative, and I suppose there is some truth in that!

Gee.. does it really show?

Drivel he is not a Rino. never was.

That depends on your view of the GOP and it's proper place in the political spectrum. If you think Ike, Nixon, and Ford were conservatives you probably think the Bushes are also conservatives. But if like me your concept of a conservative Republican is Ronald Reagan, then both Bush 41 and 43 are RINOs, and McCain is a ne plus ultra RINO.

You are correct, sir, he is not a RINO. He's more like a socialist or, at best, another garden-variety liberal. That he belonged to the Republican Party was purely accidental or a matter of convenience.

Agreed. I find him more in tune with the liberal label than anything else. Way too much the social engineer and big spender.

Whether he issues the pardons will play a major role in my final opinion of him. Admittedly, it is not very good right now.

Compean had Davila in a ditch. When Davila came out of the ditch Compean tried to take his head off with a horizontal butt stroke. He missed and went down. Davila took off for Mexico. Compean was embarrassed and mad and shot at his back 14 times if I recall correctly. Ramos came up, saw his partner firing and shot Davila in the butt. Righteous shoot or dirty cop? In my opinion Compean should have been convicted and Ramos acquitted. I think the punishment Compean received was excessive. If I were king for a day I would pardon Ramos and commute Compean’s sentence. Not that it matters but I have been in that ditch (retrieving a duck) and I have been up and down those levees from Ft Hancock to Fabens.

Yes they do have hope, of at least having their sentences commuted for time served so they can go back to their families. Even Sutton said their sentences were too harsh.

Now is the time for prayer.

Hey President Bush, listen up! Go ahead and destroy the last tattered remains of the the current sorry repubbie party. You don't pardon Ramos and Compean, then I pray that Obama has the political wit to burn you, and all associated with you on this fiasco. I hope Obama starts on day one about failed Boosh policies, and, to make things right, that Booosh refused to do, tht would be pardon the two, on his first day of office.

Jorge, you are anything but a conservative. I'm just sorry for having to vote for you twice, because there was no one else to vote for, rather than against.
