There had been a cross burning on a black family’s (teacher??) yard a couple years ago or so. The rule to ban the Confederate flag came about because of that incident I believe.
The school has had other rules in place for awhile regarding wearing bandanas (gang colors I suppose) and other symbols that “interfere” with safety and learning. But, acording to the kids suspended over the flag, those rules weren’t really enforced. (Perhaps a polite “put your bandanna in your backpack please”).
The time around the Civil War was so very interesting on every level. I expect that I probably had family on both sides of the conflict. We are doing a genealogy, but have not come to a conclusion for that question.
As an alumni of Mp, and the closest of any of these kids will ever come to being a “hick”, their ignorance is very amusing, most of these kids live across the street in the housing developments, raise by their middle class white parents that are most likely both from WA themselves. The closest they come to being a redneck, is what they consider dressing like one and “embracing” the flag. What a joke.
Personally, I believe people should be allowed to display it. Many have redeemed the cultural heritage through the years, with people like Larry the Cable Guy, shows like "Dukes of Hazard", and Movies like "Talladega Nights" :) And don't forget events like the "Redneck Olympics". It takes a great deal of humility to try and redeem the culture and heritage through humor.
I say let em fly the stars and bars with the understanding that it is offensive to some.
