-43 Degree Temps Recorded In North Dakota

Much of the country is in winter's icy grip and forecasters said it won't be letting go anytime soon.

In Pollock, S.D., temperatures fell to a record-setting 47 below zero Thursday. Todd Moser works at a gas station where he said it took about 10 minutes to get the pumps working.

Record to near record lows were set all over the Midwest, including Aberdeen, S.D., at -42 degrees; Dubuque, Iowa, at -26 degrees; Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at -29 degrees. The -29 degrees at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was the coldest temperature ever recorded there breaking a record that had been held for 35 years, the city also reported a -67 degree wind chill. The coldest spot was Garrison, N.D., where air temperatures dipped to a bone-chilling -43 F degrees below zero.

I hate to throw water on the fire figuratively but earlier this week where I live it was the headlines, Alaska.

I had -37 temps for almost two weeks.

For the last three days its changed almost 80 degrees, at this very minute 3:23 AM its 48 above just north of Wasilla, Alaska.

I am laughing at Obama, Palins revenge!

In the case of the government, nothing is often better then something. They are about to pass Climate Change legislation that will attempt to prevent Global Warming. How do you prevent Global Warming ? By cooling the planet obviously.

Somebody has to stop this nonsense. Seriously.

If the climate turns the way I think it will over the next 20-40 years...the Global warming folks will be ridiculed and run out on a rail...but they (and we...and everyone else) will also realize that we would have rather had global warming (manmade or not) than global cooling.

If the earth is in a cooling phase (and I think it is)...nothing good can come of it. Shorter growing periods...higher heating costs...etc.

These records we are seeing now occur every year...but look for them to increase in frequency over the next few years. Can't wait to see the climo averages for January.

I would most definitely agree, I had almost 3 feet of snow 48 hours ago, its all gone, school has been canceled because the roads are impassable, in the winter we create ice roads since a lot of areas here are rural and the gravel roads are periodically paved and left as ice roads which is far easier to drive on, of course we sand it a little not much.

Mostly Alaskans all use winter studded tires, these tires are probably banned in the lower 48, and yes they wear out our roads, often the roads when they are dry look like ruts and fill with water.

I’m about to leave my house to drive into Wasilla, I’m hoping I don’t get bogged down in the mush.

Frigid weather extends its reach over U.S.

Excerpts - It was 48 below in Fargo, North Dakota, where unprotected fingers could suffer frostbite in 60 seconds, CNN meteorologist Rob Marciano said.

"If you live east of the Mississippi River, the temperature at mid-morning may be the best you'll get," Marciano added.

"When it gets this cold, your hands are just in pain when doing something as simple as carrying bags of groceries from the car to the apartment."

They were actually reporting a lot of car accidents in Alaska because the snow thawed then froze again. Watch out for Black Ice.

I agree. Also, frostbite, frozen engine blocks, Diesel Gas problems will be occurring more frequently in the lower 48 states during winter. The next Arctic blast this winter may travel deeper south since this one seemed to be held up by the Great Lakes, which are no doubt cooling significantly as we type.

I have no less than 8 HID lamped lights I can turn on, all 4 headlights, 2 driving (amber) and 2 fog lights, they are the more powerful HID that I retrofitted.

Each lamp is the equivalent of a 120 watt halogen but has a better color output, I designed these specifically for Alaska winter driving, my most unique set of lamps are 64 extremely high power Ultraviolet LED emitters that I use in white-out driving conditions, the light though short range and not very bright will cut right through blowing snow, it does not reflect back, the truckers use blue covered spotlights as many as 20 on the big rigs that routinely drive to Prudhoe Bay, works for them!

Now that's funny. Last year I think Green Bay kicked off at -2 F. One of the sports casters set out a bottle of water, and 15 minutes later, by the time they were done talking, it was frozen solid.
