SWAT team searches gun-rights supporters
OCRegister ^ | 14 January, 2009 | Steven Greenhut

At the board meeting today, Orange County deputies searched gun-rights supporters, especially those wearing CCW buttons, according to those who attended the meeting.

Although Sheriff Sandra Hutchens said she would let the permits expire rather than revoke them, her real disdain for freedom is shown by the presence of the SWAT team and the heavyhanded searches of law-abiding residents who wanted to attend the board meeting. Did the sheriff really think that gun supporters are somehow dangerous. I’ve been to gun shows and gun events and have never felt safer.

Travis Says: January 13th, 2009 at 5:34 pm By one account there was at least 21 on-duty OCSD officers there to frisk the public. Who is paying for that?

bpsqwerty Says: January 13th, 2009 at 5:43 pm put in a metal detector! how hard can it be.

JohnnyVegas Says: January 13th, 2009 at 10:52 pm You have to screen people for weapons at any major public building today-but you only need 1-3 cops doing the deed-and I have no idea why SWAT would be involved for something like that.

Face it-public officials are universally hated today-and if not for weapons screening I bet a number would be knocked off.

Tacohunter Says: January 14th, 2009 at 5:10 am That’s funny……….she feels threatened being around a bunch of middle aged white fat guys at a BOS meeting and surrounds herself with a dozen swat team officers, yet I work in Compton every day surrounded by some of the most violent gang bangers in the country and I can’t get my permit renewed because nobody has actually taken a shot me …yet.

ocobserver Says: January 14th, 2009 at 11:01 am taco,

My heart is with ya, man. Sort of makes you feel like a declawed house cat. Your owner shoves you outside every night at 11pm and won’t let you back in the house until sun up. Maybe if you buy a pair of baggies and learn some popular gang signs they’ll leave you alone.

Rick Says: January 14th, 2009 at 12:52 pm …so how many were searched, and how many guns were found?

OCNewswatcher Says: January 14th, 2009 at 1:08 pm Until the people start flooding her office with calls of protest, or flooding requests for CCW’s or taking to the streets like they do in San Fransisco…. nothing will change. Nothing.

I too wonder exactly what she feared? I think it’s the attitude of law enforcement that anyone but themselves are a threat, at all times, and should be treated accordingly. I also believe that if anyone treats law enforcement as a threat they are called “cop haters” and “gun nuts”

Meh, what can ya’ do…… Nothing.

Eric - Costa Mesa Says: January 15th, 2009 at 8:46 am This pattern of behavior goes to her character. She feels she needs 20 or so armed body guards from the SWAT Team to go into a public meeting that already has police security reveals a real paranoia.

John Hardin Says: January 15th, 2009 at 9:50 am Intimidation, pure and simple.

4th Amendment? Wozzat?

How about responding this way: "Officer if you lay your hands on me without my permission I'll have you charged with assault and battery." Then you hand them a copy of the relevant Statute.

Then you remind them very politely that since they've now been made aware of the Law they've lost their Immunity to Civil Suits.

Then sit back and watch the fun.

Could someone have phoned in a threat? That’s the only thing I can think of that might justify this action.??? Of course, even if there was no threat, that’s probably the excuse she’ll use.

In the peace officers owrld there used to be three groups. Us, them and civilians. In the law enforcement world there are only two. Us and them.

"Wait till Obama starts to send his defense corps door to door."

Must be the ones he will hire from his home town in Africa. I doubt if he would get many American Citizens to volunteer for brown shirt duty where the uniform of the day is jack boots and brown shirts, swinging a scimitar and brandishing S.W.A.T. rifles.

I have often wondered which side the cops would take when it comes down to a choice of supporting and defending either a corrupt, oppressive government or the Constitution.

I guess now we know.

It won't be so simple. There are quite a few police out there who will support their oath to defend the Constitution. However, we will be best served by them staying inside the system and providing intelligence rather than by them resigning from the force in protest.

In a lot of states, federal laws will simply not be enforced. In *Canada*, a number of provinces simply refused to enforce their draconian gun registry. Civil resistance was massive. A few people went to jail, but they have changed governments and the Conservatives made it a campaign pledge to eliminate the draconian “long gun” registry, which is what was being resisted. I am not sure that they will win, but they have a good shot, and we should be able to do better.

Having people on our side *inside* the system will be an enormous help.

Cowardice is a terrible burden to carry.

Maybe this chick needs to find a less frightening line of work, like elementary school teacher or secretary.

Anything that fits her abilities and mind set.

Are you kidding? Thousands of disaffected "yutes" will line up to sign up, just to get it over on "the man" (that's you and me, folks).

I wish that I shared your optimism.

Unfortunately, I read stories here every day of police who use their authority to abuse, harm, and even kill citizens. Then, I look at the comments, and some who claim to be LEOs(supposedly Conservative FReepers) post some pretty outrageous replies in defense of some of the worst cases. It generally deteriorates into the dreaded "us vs. them" argument in which the LEOs (or those who claim to be) end up bragging about their abuse of people. Just this week, one of the usual suspects bragged about how much he enjoyed confiscating people's personal property over traffic (equipment) violations. Not that he did it because it was his job... not because it made the community safer...but because he got off on it. Is it too much of a stretch to think he will feel any differently when he comes to take your guns? After all, if taking someone's vehicle made him feel powerful, how much more of a power trip will it be when he and those like him are the only ones with the power to decide which of the rest of your property you should be allowed to keep?

These SWAT guys had to know that there was no reasonable reason for them (as SWAT officers) to be there. These were law abiding citizens using their Constitutional right to freely assemble. SWAT had to know that their presence was an intimidation tactic, yet they went along because they were just "following orders".

Where have we heard THAT before?
