U.S. Astronaut Jack Schmitt Joins Global Warming Skeptics
Opposing Views ^ | 1/16/2009 | Dan Miller

American astronaut Dr. Jack Schmitt—the last living man to walk on the moon—is the latest scientist to be added to the roster of more than 70 skeptics who will confront the subject of global warming at the second annual International Conference on Climate Change in New York City March 8-10, 2009.

The conference expects to draw 1,000 attendees including private-sector business people, state and federal legislators and officials, policy analysts, media, and students.

Schmitt, who earned a Ph.D. from Harvard in geology, is the twelfth person to walk on the Moon; as of 2008, of the nine living moonwalkers, he and his crewmate Eugene Cernan were the last two to walk there.

“As a geologist, I love Earth observations,” Schmitt says. “But, it is ridiculous to tie this objective to a ‘consensus’ that humans are causing global warming when human experience, geologic data and history, and current cooling can argue otherwise. ‘Consensus,’ as many have said, merely represents the absence of definitive science. You know as well as I, the ‘global warming scare’ is being used as a political tool to increase government control over American lives, incomes, and decision making ...”

Schmitt will be among more than 70 scientists, economists, public officials, legal experts, and climate specialists calling attention to new research that contradicts claims that Earth’s moderate warming during the twentieth century primarily was man-made and has reached crisis proportions.

Joseph Bast, president of The Heartland Institute, producer of the event along with more than 30 co-sponsors, explained, “At the first conference last March, we proved that the skeptics in the debate over global warming constitute the center or mainstream of the scientific community while alarmists are on the fringe.

“Now in the past nine months, the science has grown even more convincing that global warming is not a crisis. Also suggesting this ‘crisis’ is over are opinion polls in the U.S. and around the globe and political events, including the decisive defeat of ‘cap-and-trade’ legislation in the U.S. Senate last spring. The crisis has been cancelled by sound science and common sense.”

People like Al Gore cannot hold a wooden match to people like this. That anyone listens to Gore is just too silly to try to figure out.

We had “global warming” in the 60’s and the 70’s.

Difference was, back then they called it “acid rain”.

Look it up, research it, then think about it.
You will see EXACTLY the same agenda.

Harrison Hagan “Jack” Schmitt (born July 3, 1935) is an American geologist, a former NASA astronaut and a one-term U.S. Senator. He is the twelfth person to walk on the Moon; he and his crewmate Eugene Cernan were the last two to walk there.

Al Gore, like a chipmunk that disappears when it gets cold, has disappeared from the news. It is heartening to see Dr. Schmitt bring "adult supervision" to the global warming hoax. I honestly believe that what he is doing would not have been necessary 20 or 30 years ago when common sense prevailed.

Today after two generations of affirmative action not only have we dumbed down our government offices and schools, but we have politicized science. Why not? With so many dummies in charge who cannot even ask an intelligent question about science, but can destroy our economy with moronic policies. Our nation is on the brink of economic and cultural collapse, IMO.

WHOA! Acid rain WAS real, and it was also reasonably simple to fix... although the fixing of acid rain probably helped cause some of the exceptional fast temperature rise in the 1990s which is now attributed to global warming.

If you don’t believe acid rain was real, you should spend an weekend in the Adirondacks, where the lakes and dorests are still recovering.

The problem with acid rain is that the sulfides being pumped into the atmosphere were mixing with atmospheric water to create an acid, which lowered the pH of the lakes and ground water so much that entire lakes went completely dead. The government required scrubbers be put on sulfur-emitting smokestacks, and sulfuric acid content in the air plummeted.

Ironically, the sulfuric aerosols also helped seed cloud formation. This helped reflect into space much of the sun’s radiation. At the same time, the solar cycles had become very severe. Solar emissions drive away cosmic rays which also cause cloud formation. So for a few decades, we weren’t experiencing the kind of heat that solar cycles cause. When we cleaned up all the sulfur emissions, the sun shining on the earth got a lot brighter, and the temperature of the Earth gained about 0.5 degrees between teh late 80s and the turn of the millennium.

Now, it’s that sudden warming that they are blaming on the greenhouse gasses, as they re-write history to obscure the cooling that occurred in the 1940s and 1950s.

And also the recent declaration of the beluga whale in Alaska’s Cook Inlet as an Endangered Species, and hence the 30 by 100 miles Inlet as a ES Habitat.

Doing those two things unleashes a whole arsenal of harassment tools to the left and the envirowhackos,

Guaranteed they’ll be used to stifle, hamstring, and impede development of homes, commerce, fishing tours, and of course energy from Anchorage to the tip of Kenai Peninsula. Not to mention anything considered a watershed into Cook Inlet.

Economic destruction is the whole point of the Endangered Species Act, at least so far as the left is concernend.

Dr. Jack Schmitt—the last living man to walk on the moon

A strange statement altogether. Dead men don't walk on the moon. Alternatively, Neil Armstrong was the first living man to walk on the moon. Coincidentally, he is still alive.

Ahhh...I love Saturday mornings and a hot cup of decaf.

My wife worked in his 2nd campaign. She went to church with his mother. We lived in Silver City, NM for almost 14 years. Silver City is near where Jack was born in Santa Rita, an open pit copper mine has replace the town of Santa Rita.

He was defeated after his 1-st term by Jeff Bingaman, who is one of the most leftist members of the Senate. Jeff’s uncle John Bingaman was a local Demo King Maker, and loan shark (literally)

A New York ad agency ran Jack’s campaign and some things were said about Bingaman that although were true, the public did not want to hear.

Jack Schmitt was a Non-Politico, and was and is a great American.

And NM is what it is.

At one point I was Republican County Chairman in Grant County, lived in Silver City.

Neil Armstrong is still alive. I believe he walked on the moon. As did Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, also still alive.

I suspect this poorly worded description meant "the man who most recently walked on the moon."

My father met Gene Cernan in 1975 when Navy astronauts toured the Naval Research Lab. My father discussed the current status of TIMATION/NTS which contributed most the key concepts for GPS.

Did your father work at the Naval Research Labs?

I never worked as an Engineer, but have had a keen interest in all things technical since mid-1970’s. Got my first Ham ticket in 1976, hold an Extra-Class Amateur License and GROL commercial license. But I worked in outside sales for over 30 years.

I lived in NM from 1972-1986, and during my time there made many Ham friends who worked in the Labs. Developed great respect for their ability. Very Very few lefties in the sciences. The ones I remember were in the Newspaper business.

I also ran a Navy MARS station for 20 years. Handled health & welfare traffic for the Navy and Marine Corp. This was before the Web and cell phones. Truly enjoyed my association with them.

There were a really good group of “home brew builders” in NM then. It is a dying art, but I still liked it. Most of that time I took 4 journals on this topic. Did a lot of PC board fabrication. Screen print and etch stuff. Scrounged parts everywhere.

My father worked at NRL from 1943-1980. He designed Vanguard 1, Minitrack, invented the Naval Space Surveillance System and invented TIMATION which with minor modifications is GPS.

the sun shining on the earth got a lot brighter,

Yes, but it had to do with a peak sun-spot cycle. That's a more likely candidate then the coal scrubbers and anthropogenic cloud removal.

For several hundred years, temperature and solar activity (as inferred from the strength of sunspot cycles) correlated excellently. In the late 20th century, after a series of very strong sunspot cycles began, there was a surprising cooling, and THEN intense warming. What I’m stating is that the injection and then removal of sulfide aerosols delayed the effect of the sunspot cycle, by temporarily causing the same effect that solar weather had done in the past: that is, causing cloud formation.
