There's a couple other threads on this, but your title is the first that correctly says "Commuted".

The president said that he would only consider this after their legal appeals have been completed. He did.
This is still another case of President Bush keeping his word that no one will acknowledge.

I’m shocked and thankful. I thought that cold hearted SOB was going to leave them in prison.
It’s a sad state of affairs when American citizens must beg for mercy from a President with the powers of a King.

yep. “Commutation” gets them out of the can, but they still have the crime on their record.
But now they can apply to have their records expunged...

In my opinion, a pardon would right a wrong. This is part way but doesnt finish the job.I respectfully disagree. They did try to conceal evidence.
Let the conviction stand, but it's well past time they should walk free for that crime.

This could have been done a long time ago—that being said, thank God it was done, and as for me, I am going to send a note to President Bush to thank him. Lord knows he deserves a bit of gratitude for the good things he has done.

Some justice at last. I never expected this. I thought that GWB was too close to Sutton to take this action. Of course, this is not a pardon, but the time served was already way too much. Keeping those agents in prison hurt the Republican Party too.

Finally, somebody posts a thread on this and gets the terminology correct. Sentences commuted, crimes not pardoned.
I suppose this means they’ll never work in law enforcement again, with the convictions still on their record.
But at least they’ll soon be home with their families.
And Bush Buddy Johnny Sutton doesn’t lose Prosecutor Points by having their convictions disappear. We were so worried about that. (Do I need the sarcasm tag?)

As usual, George Bush shows his stripes. He didn’t grant them pardons, which would expunge their unjust prosecution, but instead commutes their sentences. This will release them from prison, but their records will stand as convicted felons, thus injuring them for the rest of their lives. I guess he didn’t want to offend that snake, Fed. Prosecutor Johnny Sutton.
To: Spunky
Great!
Now for Scooter Libby....
