WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former President Bill Clinton said on Monday that American politics over the next 30 years will be marked by a practical, inclusive approach rather than the partisan battles that defined the last 40 years.
The victory last November of President-elect Barack Obama, who takes office on Tuesday, closed the curtains on the post-1960s era during which politicians used divisive issues like gun control to motivate an ideological hard core, Clinton told a gathering of mayors.
In the future, Democrats and Republicans will try to appeal to a broader spectrum of voters concerned with effective government and other nuts-and-bolts issues, Clinton said.
"We will not go forward anymore, I don't think, with the politics of division and destruction that for too long have dragged us down," said Clinton, like Obama a Democrat.

Sadly, Clinton’s probably right, in that there are FAR fewer GOPers in Congress to contest 0bama. Now shut out from offering alternative legislation in the House and facing an effective super-majority of dems in the Senate, they won’t be in a position to BE divisive. They can only stand by and watch the enemy drown the nation.

I believe that there will be more divisiveness over the next two years than ever before, especially if the Democrats persist in pursuing investigations of Bush administration officials and policies. Hopefully Republican candidates with guts and the willingness to speak out on Democrat corruption and excesses will appear before the next congressional elections.

Conservatism believes that power should be divided among innumerable small groups as this is the best way to preserve liberty for ourselves and our children. Leftism believes in a grand collective structure that encompasses all facets of life; politics, law, morality, religion, business, and familial relations all become a single entity guided and directed by a small oligarchy of the “wisest and best” - which conveniently turn out to be said leftists.
