One thing that is so amazing to me (a child during WWII) is that I had NEVER heard of this amazing achievement.
I read an article in my local newspaper this weekend about Tuvia Bielski's granddauaghter who also did not even know of her grandparents' involvement in this rescue until hearing about it at his funeral. She then moved in with her grandmother and quizzed her for 4 years about it. Finally the elderly survivor opened up and told many of the details. The granddaughter has now produced a documentary about these events which she hopes will be released next year. I wish that I could remember the name of the article and the name of the granddaughter so that I could post it here. Alas, my memory fails me and a search on my local paper's pathetic search engine turns up nothing.
At the time I read the article I had not seen the movie and could not understand why their descendents knew so little about these events. After seeing the movie, I know why.
Do yourselves a favor. See this film in a theater. Do not wait for it to come out on DVD.
