Rapid greying of Obama's hair raises the question: Can stress turn hair grey?

TORONTO - Barack Obama appears to come by his nickname honestly.

Despite stepping into the U.S. presidency at perhaps the most difficult juncture in decades, No Drama Obama seems as unruffled - and as youthful - now as he did nearly two years ago when he announced he was seeking the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.

Except, that is, for the small matter of his hair.

Since last summer, Obama's once jet-black hair has gone grey at a startling clip.

Is this a bit of lese-majeste , to intimate that That One might not be free from the stresses and strains of mortal men?

Yes, and Grecian formula, applied regularly on a campaign trail can also turn grey hair black.

Yes, stress can turn hair grey. And Zinc supplements can reverse the grey. Dunno why that is, but it is.

Hmmm, I once read that the heavy use of marijuana would cause a person's hair to become prematurely gray.

This happens to every president-elect. Once they tell you the Big Secret, all that happy-clappy campaign bull goes out the window.

And it’s not just his hair. Notice how much more serious his demeanor has become since his first briefing. Whatever it is they tell you must be a real humdinger.

I am pretty sure he kept it black early on to look young and hip, and then abruptly let it go more gray in the general election when he wanted to appear experienced and wise to get the older voters.

I've always been amazed at the before and after pictures of the President.

THIS one is going to be very dramatic!

Rapid greying of Obama's hair raises the question: Can stress turn hair grey?

Compare pictures of Ronald Reagan to Clinton and 0bama and it is obvious that stress has less impact on greying hair than the slinging of BS does.

Why do you think GWB abandoned free market and used government to take over the banks and insurance companies? The losses and potential losses from over leveraging by Wall Street threatens to destroy the social stability of the US. That info is withheld by the government, because if the people knew the real numbers, there would be a run on our banks. The bailout is a holding action until the markets improve or someone finds a financial solution. BHO just learned of the real numbers, plus other pressing issues such as terrorist threats and etc. I think he knows that he did not do himself a favor by winning the election in 2008.

You got that right. Once he started getting the sooper sekrit briefings right before the election, his demeanor totally changed. When he gave his victory speech on election night, he looked freaked out, not happy. That must be some serious crap that they unloaded on him.

Yeah his hair did go gray really fast. Kind of reminds me of the black chick in Omega Man. Near the end of the movie, she went shopping in the daylight, and by nighttime her hair went from black to white as the zombie virus overcame her immune system.

Probably. But so can make-up, especially when an young actor is being made to look "mature."

Zinc is extremely important - it plays a role in immune function, muscle gain and retention, male sexual health, clotting, healing functions, etc - it is a critical enzyme cofactor, and also plays a role in cell signaling. A deficiency can manifest itself in so many different ways that diagnosis is often not reached until a wide collection of symptoms develops. Premature graying is one such symptom (but obviously there are numerous other potential causes). Another is hair loss.

Zinc can be the limiting factor in the production of testosterone in your body (and the inhibition of aromatase from converting testosterone into estrogen) - it may be the case that problems associated with low serum testosterone levels can be solved with zinc supplementation. Directly related to testosterone production, zinc is used in the production of luteinizing and follicle stimulating hormones as well.

I take 20 mg per day of zinc monomethionine (high bioavailability - when supplementing, you have to exceed the RDI for most trace minerals because the bioavailability of the naked compounds is much lower compared to the bioavailability of the compounds when contained in foods) PLUS 300 micrograms of copper (reason being that you need to maintain a proper ratio of zinc to copper, or risk developing or exacerbating a host of neurological problems, for starters). Stopped my hairloss in its tracks.

Yes, stress can turn hair grey.

Aw dang, you went and answered it. I was going to write in to Mythbusters and see if they'd try this out. ;-)

Not sure how they'd test it, but most of their confirming or busting of myths and urban legends seems to involve shooting something; blowing something up; drinking; or (poorly) remote controlled full-sized cars. Maybe they just need to put their producers in front of the camera once, I'll bet they're gray already.

Hmmm, I once read that the heavy use of marijuana would cause a person's hair to become prematurely gray.

Mine's been going grey since I was 20. Only thing I've smoked is tires. Now approaching 40, the grey has a slight lead in land ownership, but the brown is not conceding defeat.

Is it possible to produce this particular type of graying by using hair coloring? If so, then my bet is that rather than his hair having started to gray, which he concealed by dyeing it black during the campaign, instead, he deliberately artificially grayed it in order to gain some gravitas.

Just a thought.
