Axe the political speeches and we'll watch Oscars, say viewers

Respondents also more likely to watch ceremony if The Dark Knight is nominated for best picture, according to poll of US moviegoers

The producers of this year's Oscars ceremony should cut out political speeches, make sure The Dark Knight is up for best picture and excise all trace of Jack Nicholson if they want to boost audience figures, according to a new poll.

Viewer numbers for the annual TV broadcast have been haemorrhaging in recent years, leading online ticketing firm Fandango to commission a poll to find out why. More than 7,000 people in the US were asked what they most liked and loathed about the Academy Awards show.

The No 1 turn-off for viewers turned out to be political speeches, with 51% saying they would be more likely to watch a show which banned them. "We don't care what you think about politics," said one respondent. "A bit of graciousness would be in order."

>>Not much chance of that! <<

Yeah, I stopped watching the Oscars even before the politics got overwhelming.

But the most bizarre suggestion was that producers stop cutting away to Jack Nicholson's face whenever anyone made a quip. "The producers are counting on Jack's killer smile to make the jokes look funnier than they are," sniffed one respondent.

Ha, ha. Jack does seem to be a perennial at the shows. Speaking of Nicholson, I like this clip from the Witches of Eastwick between him and Cher:

My guess is that the people who voted for 0 are the only people who WILL watch this this self obsessed show PRECISELY because of the political speeches.

Well, for someone who lives a good 6 blocks away from the Kodak Theater, I have seen the outside ONCE as a request for visiting friends but that’s it. My neighbors get out of the neighborhood and head to Vegas because they block the main road getting out of our street. Too much traffic.
I’ll watch it IF Mickey Rourke gets a nomination, and The dark Knight gets nominated (my buddy works for Legendary), but other than those they can all burn in hell.

I wouldn’t watch it under any circumstances. Anyway, they will be over-the-top political with Oboomer and Prop. 8.

In the 90’s I used to usually watch, but I don’t go to the movies but about once every 3 or 5 years so I don’t know the flicks. Plus the actors are too mouthy about everything under the sun especially conservatives and Republicans. It’s a BIG turn off. I have followed along with the FReeper threads while watching and that’s always fun to criticize with my fellow evil conservatives.

This sounds pretty good until you think about what is going on here.

Political statements weren’t a problem for the last eight years were they.

Now that Obama is in, the Academy is sensitive to political statements.

The Academy can take the whole production and shove it up their posteriors as far as they can reach. I’ve got no use for the anti-Americans that star in the films today. Now that they’ve screwed this nation into the dirt, they can mug for the cameras without me having to get sick to my stomach in the process.

I’ve nearly cut out supporting the movie industry in any way. My wife and I won’t be seeing any new movies anytime soon.

I may not be able to stop guys like Obama selling this nation out, but I can refuse to support those who donated the most to get him in the position to do it.

F these Leninist traitors.

Nothing they do or don’t do would make watch it. I couldn’t care less about a bunch of navel-gazing self-absorbed self-important aging children. Nothing they do is relevant to my life, if Hollywood was blown up tonight I wouldn’t miss it and it make a bit of difference in my life. I don’t watch movies, except the ones made years ago by people who are dead, with real Americans like Jimmy Stewart and Clark Gable in them. Just think, Carole Lombard died in a plane selling war bonds for the war effort. Those stars didn’t take themselves seriously, they knew they were blessed to get paid doing what they did, and they understood that it was entertainment, not indulging in their personal fantasies or beating people over the head with “messages” (they’re not even that subtle these days, no message is intimated, you’re beat over the head with their views). I don’t watch a movie made roughly past Louis B Mayer’s stewardship of MGM.

It’s not just the puerile political diatribes that makes the Oscars unwatchable — it’s all the unseemly self-important bozos that just blubber on and on. I’ve only ever watched occasionally, but when I’ve tried to watch I find very little that interests me. There’s just too much ego and too little thought or entertainment.

No matter how good an actor Tom Hanks is; he became tainted spewing his rhetoric which is nonsense. I will probably never watch a movie or want to see him again. However, a lot of the stars or celebs don’t even have talent. I am not sure what they are there for; but I am certainly not entertained by a nitwit who would presume to think I should be subjected to their political whining(mostly what it is).

Mine too, I was thinking of that as I typed my post, but couldn’t remember who said it. I might have known it was a “Goldwynism”, LOL.

Unfortunately, you can't even do that anymore. Western Union doesn't send messages anymore.

I haven’t watched an awards show in over 30 years. I don’t understand the appeal.

How convenient that this now comes out the day after the Obama administration has begun.

What a bunch of hypocritical cowards.
