One Hundred Tons of Garbage Collected After Obama Inauguration One-hundred tons of trash were collected by city and federal sanitation workers after President Obama's Jan. 20 inauguration in Washington, D.C.
Friday, January 23, 2009
The scene looked more like the leftovers of a massive college frat party.
Heaps of plastic bottles, food wrappers, soda cans, and newspapers, which blanketed the National Mall Wednesday morning, were a stark contrast to the stateliness and splendor of President Barack Obama's inaugural ceremony a day before.
One hundred tons of trash were collected by city and federal sanitation workers, according to Department of Public Works public information officer Linda Grant.
In comparison, 40 tons of garbage were collected in New York City's Time Square on New Year's Day 2009 -- after one million people attended the celebration -- according to the city's Department of Sanitation.
Grant said Washington's massive inaugural cleanup effort began at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
"By 5:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, we collected about 90 tons of the garbage," she said.

There’s a pun in that title somewhere....
There will be lots of garbage left over after the 0’s term is up...
In other news, murders and rapes were down by 2000% in the ghettos of America on the day of the inauguration.
Ahhh... the environmentally conscious leaving their trash all over.
—that’s peanuts compared to the Sturgis , SD bike rally—except there it mostly goes into dumpsters—
There’s a better metaphor. I’m gonna have to save that one in my quotes/headlines file for later use.
Change = Ghett-Obama. Lovely of his supporters to support the Green initiative by trashing out the National Mall.......
Just think how much more garbage they missed by not continuing up Pennsylvania Avenue.
And half of it was Aretha’s hat.
There was more than 100 tons of garbage there during the inauguration.
Ohhhhhh how that article title just BEGS for it.....
Doesn’t that come down to about 0.1 lbs per person if there were 2M people there? I guess that’s a little less than 2 oz of trash each.
Too bad they let so much of the garbage escape.
And after the equally large promise keepers rally on the mall,
it was CLEANER than before they arrived.
Yes, I’m saying our people ARE better people than theirs.
If my math is right, they could have picked up another 45-50 tons of garbage in the Capitol building...
I think they missed a pickup down at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Does that include the verbal garbage?
From the article:
“Grant said that the largest bulk of garbage was left behind by vendors selling President Obama souvenirs.”
You forgot that as of Noon Tuesday there aren’t any homeless and there won’t be for the next four years.
LOL!!! Yep. :)
LOL!!! Yep. :)
sorry for the double post—I just clicked once; not sure what happened.
One Hundred Tons of Garbage Collected After Obama Inauguration.........
.....I wonder how much of that was tossed away American flags, discarded “mary jane” joints and used condoms from the Obama orgy love-in??????????
There is a way this pile of trash may be turned into something useful.
A gas (nitrogen) is ionized by passing high voltage between two electrodes, converting the gas into plasma. The energy of the plasma arc is so powerful, it breaks down matter into its component parts by stripping the valence electrons from the atoms, and tearing apart the molecular bonds. The plasma arc is intensely hot (as high as 30,000 degrees Fahrenheit). The plasma plume can render any organic material into elemental components.
Basically, you put tons of trash in one end of a plasma converter, and a superheated plasma arc obliterates the trash into its molecular components. The process is called “plasma gasification”. There are two byproducts: one is a “Syngas” composed mostly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which can be used directly as fuel. The other is molten glass (silica) that can be sold for use in household tiles or road asphalt. Amazingly, plasma converters produce enough energy to power themselves, and actually produce an excess of energy that can be sold to the grid. Still, some environmental scientists have warned that the residual substances may contain toxic heavy metals.
The metal content need not be a problem, if the slag produced by this process is treated as a mineral ore, and the metals are extracted by commonly used ore treatment technologies.
It’s an engineering problem, and most of the kinks have already been worked out. Each of these converters cost about $250 million, so we have a place to spend all that “TARP” money which is still unspent. Think of it, practically pollution-free power generation out of stuff that was just going to a landfill anyway.
Please send this to Ashton Kutcher’s and Demi Moore’s house.
How much trash was left after the March for Life?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm? Oh. None? Is that comparison being made anywhere?
I thought they all went to the White House.
“Does this hat make me look fat or just crazy?”
I'm no statistician, but ... the overtime for the feds, and perhaps the city, additional fuel cost to collect and transport the garbage to the appropriate facility ( did they separate as they collected ? ), the cost for the carbon credits to offset all this pollution, minus the value of the plastic and aluminum ... I think it's a net loss of millions.
But OH! Wasn't he just dreamy ?
I just puked on my keyboard and added to the cost .. I have to buy more plastic and throw this one away ... and I will NOT separate it, neither.
Okay, who threw away Aretha Franklin and Oprah Winfrey?
As I stated previously, This crowd would make the Woodstock aftermath look like a Marine barracks by comparison. Once the trash left the trash was left. And did we see any pictures of this on the News? NOOOOOOOO! ! ! Got pics post them.
How about both? ;)
With these two we'd be way ahead of the trickle up poverty pimps.
Celebrities, politicians, and bigwigs using 600 private jets will produce 25,320,000 POUNDS of CO2
Personal vehicles could account for 262,483,200 POUNDS of CO2
In the parade, horses alone will produce more than 400 POUNDS of CO2
The IFL also came up with a revealing illustration about what this all means:
It would take the average U.S. household 57,598 years to produce a carbon footprint equal to that of the new presidents housewarming party.
And they didn't even account for garbage collection.
The rest of the garbage left on foot.
ah, but the Homeless still aren’t allowed into the area. Besides. homelessness is only a problem during Republican administrations. . .
Where have you been? The Democrats solved homelessness back in 1992. Right before they cured AIDS.
Tower of Babble-on.
Rush’s comment: Hurricane ‘Latrina’ hits the Washington Mall. I laughed.
This is the only one I've found so far. And it was posted HERE on FR.
I’m sure the small American Flags weigh about 2oz. each.
A lot, actually.
Almost all of it was either bagged and stacked next to the permanent (but full) trash cans or thrown into temporary "cages" labeled "PLEASE DEPOSIT TRASH HERE".
