The First Lady has excited the fashion world, but like Diana she would rather champion the less fortunate than be a mere clotheshorse.
Michelle Obamas flair for fashion has captivated Washington and set the hearts of glossy magazine editors aflutter. She has already eclipsed Carla Bruni, the super-model chanteuse and wife of Nicolas Sarkozy, the hyperactive French president. Not since Diana, Princess of Wales, has there been such a glamorous role model at the apex of society.
In her white, one-shouldered chiffon gown, she boogied to Stevie Wonders Signed, Sealed, Delivered Im Yours and slow-danced with her husband at a succession of inaugural balls. Barack Obama held her lovingly around the waist, clasping two fingers around her back, and nuzzled her. Womens Wear Daily, the influential American fashion magazine, said her ball gown made the Obamas look like newlyweds.
By the time they reached the last ball in the marbled hall of Union Station after midnight, Michelle looked absolutely exhausted but still managed to keep smiling. It was quite an intimate dance they were either collapsed in each others arms or feeling very close to each other, said another dancer.
Michelle, 45, has a theatrical sense of style, from off-the-rack colourful clothes from J Crew at less than $100 a throw, to pricey designer outfits such as the sparkling lemongrass matching dress and coat that she wore to the inauguration ceremony. But she is determined to carve out a role at the White House that is more than national clothes horse.

I can see the horse reference, but the rest?
They can’t sell the Jackie O stick; so they are changing to Diana. LOL
Horse was good. Train (as in huge caboose) would work. Aunt Esther retrospective nails it.
Dang it, man - I had just taken a big swig of Trader Joe’s Wintry Blend coffee.
You owe me a new keyboard!
And, what makes these nitwits in the media think that women are interested in the * frivolous * * trivial * anyway.
Michelle is being portrayed as a fashion airhead. Is this what she went to college for? Isn't she a lawyer?
What's next Aretha Franklin's turban with the huge bow?
Flare for fashion - who are they talking about?
Well, she is like Diana in one way they are/were married to really stupid men.
Laughable. A woman filled with hate and rage.
She would look just perfect. In a ....FUR...coat.
She can boggie right out of the US as far as I am concerned.
She is an ordinary woman with ordinary charms. They do her a disservice when they try to assign attributes to her that don’t fit. Because inevetibly you look at her and say ... here are all the reasons she is not Princess Di.
Kind of like claiming a former first daughter is “beautiful”. You can say nothing about her looks, or you can say she looks nice. But if you call her “beautiful” it just highlights the fact that she isn’t.
Took me qo minutes to get through this rag, just too many hysterically funny things in it. Then I had to wait till I stopped laughing, or at least enough to type this.
La la land!!
I see they put an official color name to that puke colored ill fitting dress.
We have eyes and can see the fashion blunders for ourselves; who do these weirdos think they’re kidding?
Michelle could wrap herself in toilet paper (which it looked like she already did at the inaugural balls) and they’d say how avante-garde it was. Everything is manufactured with the Obamas, with the media trying to tell us not to believe our lyin’ eyes.
All that, and with her size she could pull a plow across a field.
RK, that’s an award winning shop.
