I'm sure those girls from Dallas Academy aren't masochists. I doubt they'd have felt the same.

Once your butt's been kicked, it takes poise to remain standing and continue on. Therein lies a concrete example of sportsmanship. Never surrender. To continue to run up a score, however, is unsportsmanlike. I suspect some here would have been chanting "Losers, losers, losers" during the 4th quarter.

Instructing your players on what to do does not violate league rules.

He didn't get fired for winning or running up the score, he got fired for publicly disagreeing with his employer’s apology...

The rest of the story! Kind of puts this whole thing in a different perspective.

It matters to the school, it doesn’t matter to me. They’re entitled to fire him, and quite frankly I wouldn’t want to work for a school like this. He did what I presume they hired him to do, win. Maybe they should have told him to win but not by to much. I guess the school would think it was wrong if one kid gets a 100 on a test and another gets a 50. Wouldn’t want to humiliate the kid that got a 50.

Apples and oranges.

You know better.

If you don't, you're in need of an education.

“and quite frankly I wouldn’t want to work for a school like this”

Well, it’s a Christian school.

I thought the way the media played up the losing team was pathetic.

Should they get credit for finishing the game? yes sure, they did not quit.

However the wining team should also get credit for treating the losing team like serious contenders, not the pathetic wimps the drive by media wants them to be.

Please explain to me how it’s different. Educate me since you seem to think you’re so smart.

I think the point the coach needed to learn is that criticizing your employer is bad.

What the heck does the fact that it’s a “Christian” school have to do with it. Do Christian schools often fire their employees for doing their jobs. Not very “Christian” of them.

One is team competitive sports.

The other is academic performance.

One counts only for the heart and soul. The other counts for heart, soul and wisdom.

If you really, truly cannot distinguish between elective sports and academic education...........................

They should fire the person that scheduled the game, not the coach who did his job. Unless he is that person.

We have all been told that the objective in school sports is to build character, learn sportsmanship, etc. But, hey, clearly some do think the objective is to simply win games.

Maybe it some places, but not in TX where my kids (who are now 32, 29 and 28) went to school. In fact, I taught in TX in the late 90s and 2000s. It didn’t go on there either. I’m sorry you lived in such a silly place!

I have been informed that is a “Christian” school so it seems to me they should have been more forgiving. After all they may have left the guy without a means to support his family, which would not be very “Christian” of them.

Some people around here are acting like the guy had his team beat the other team up, and steal their lunch money.

The people really responsible for this are the ones who thought it might be a good idea to allow a team, who obviously can’t play basketball, to play a team, who obviously can. This can’t be the first time this particular team has lost by a significant amount.

I see absolutely no reason or justice to deprive a man and his family of his livlihood for doing what he was hired to do.

LOL! No, I suppose you don't. The school, however, seems to have the impression that Mr. Grimes is not a good fit for them. His "post-apology" behavior seems to bear that out at least as well as his game-day behavior does.

You know, there are people around the world who routinely humiliate their opponents, where it is part of their culture. I don’t think of that as an American value at all. I think of Americans as good sports who like to win, but also really revel in a game that shows strength of character. If you think about the best sports stories none of them are about one team trouncing another (or beating the snot out of them to use a phrase I’ve seen several times). They are generally about someone doing something against all odds or showing extraordinary character.

Some people are better at sports and some people are better at academics. As far as I’m concerned education has little to do with “Wisdom”. Some of the most educated people I know have very little wisdom and some of the least educated people have lots of wisdom. After all, some of the most educated people voted for Bambi, not much wisdom there.

He should teach them NOT to work hard and not to strive to be the best.

Having his athletes be the "best" would have included teaching them the meaning of and the practice of sportsmanship.

sports·man·ship : conduct (as fairness, respect for one's opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing) becoming to one participating in a sport

Having a full-court press and going for three-point shots in the fourth quarter when they already had their victory more than assured in order to publicly humiliate their opponent showed extremely low class.

Their conduct did not make them the "Best Athletes". It just made them the "Most Athletic Trash".

I believe it is an American strength to act as a community, to feed off each others' strengths and to shore up our mutual weaknesses. It builds a sense of singularity and commonality and bonds us together as Americans.

We root for the underdogs, but we love a winner. Most of us prefer our winners to be dignified and display class.
