Freed Guantánamo prisoners taunt US as closure plan falls apart

President Obama's plan to close Guantánamo Bay within a year appeared to be unravelling yesterday with the emergence of former inmates on terrorist websites, fierce opposition in the US and a lukewarm response to taking detainees from the European Union.

After signing an executive order last week to close the US military prison, Mr Obama has been confronted with myriad obstacles that are making his ambitious pledge look unrealistic.

David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, ruled out the prospect of Britain taking any more inmates, claiming that it had already made a significant contribution.

Javier Solana, the EU's foreign and security policy chief, said that Europe wanted to help Mr Obama to close the prison but that no EU state could act until the new Administration could demonstrate that prisoners did not pose a threat. It emerged over the weekend that the US case files on the 250 detainees still in Guantánamo were in disarray, scattered throughout various government departments across Washington with some agencies, including the CIA, reluctant to share information.

There is broad bipartisan opposition in the US to the idea of housing detainees on American soil.

John McCain, who supports closing Guantánamo, criticised Mr Obama for declaring that he would shut it without first working out how to go about it. “I don't know a state in America that wants them,” the Arizona senator said.

I wonder which governor will be the first to come out against incarcerating the detainees in the governor's state? It could reaaly start a rush by every governor to come out against Obama's plan (or lack of one).

Team-0 may have to go back to Code Pink and ask them what to do next.

Isn’t it sad when we get differing viewpoints from abroad?

Well, Nan said yesterday that she did not want to send them to Alcatraz, but Murtha said he would take them in Johnstown.

Looks like Obama is learning his first really hard lesson in foreign affairs with his Eurobuddies now weasling out on him.

Gee, I guess "I won" doesn't work in all things.

It's almost like he thinks he can snap his fingers and make anything happen

He must not have a fundamentally grasp of the relationship between the Federal government and the States.

Here's a clue "zero"

States are sovereign entities. You can't make them do anything just because you're POTUS.

What? You mean that even poorly educated terrorists can out maneuver the “chosen one.

Of course, the man is a loon.

Yes, when you are dealing with a twisted authoritarian, anything might happen to your state if were to go against turning head-chopping, throat-cutting mad men loose in your state.

I hear the Aleutian islands are lovely this time of year, I say we fly them there and let them roam free.

Let 'em come. They won't last 5 minutes in an American prison. Especially if you put them in a military prison.

Yeah, Murtha wants them!

Were I not a firm believer in God, I would be wholly petrified that the naive kids in the sandbox are now running the US government.

Makes you wonder when the President of the United States can’t use common sense and “look before you leap”.

He flatly stated he’s going to close it within a year....but doesn’t have a concrete plan in place.

This is going to be a GREAT 4 years.

According to the news, he is already out to get the South, because we didn’t fall into lockstep with the rest of his electoral army.

We might as well tell him we won’t take his murdering thugs.
He should put in a posh barracks for them at the White House. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind having them around his wife and daughters.
