I keep hoping someone will invent a car that runs on junk mail. Then I would look forward to getting the stuff! Unfortunately, I’d have to switch from spending my time trying to get off mailing lists, to spending my time getting on them.

The Post Office overpriced their services. I notice a lot less junk mail. Also, they messed up on the priority mail box thing. Ebay was a BIG user. People chose other couriers.

As far as Saturday mail...Who needs it.

Postal carriers make good money. Here in NY in the winter, it IS hell for them but the majority of mail is via curbside.

Careful we don't wind paying more overtime.

Would like to see some real numbers on "loads". Bet we're paying more for less. Same old story....Raise "fees" and people will cut back.

“You don’t send Christmas, Birthday, etc. cards?”

Rarely send any cards at all.
Virtual cards sometimes, and sometimes with packages, which go UPS/FedEx.
Last time I used the 2-3 days USPS service it took 7 days; granted, they tell you ‘is not guaranteed’ and they mean it!

My dad, who’s now 80 years old, was a rural route carrier. His daily route was about 120 miles and he drove his own car, leaning out the passenger side to stuff the boxes as he drove along the road. At Christmastime he put a large stuffed Santa in the driver’s seat and the isolated kids along his route loved it.

That said, if the postal service gets to reduce service, they should reduce personnel and expenses. Cut out the congressional franking privileges (which are just re-election efforts anyway) and reduce the wasteful advertising “To Occupant” blitz of mail.

I haven’t read all the replies but does anyone else remember when mail was delivered twice a day?

I’ve been recently wondering why they have been continuing the 6 day schedule. I would think that given the electronic capabilities of our age, that a very high percentage of their customers wouldn’t even notice....

Better yet, return it to its original mission, instead of setting it up to try to compete with private businesses (when the USPS launched lawsuits at companies using FedEx, they lost the last shred of respect).

There should be an official postal service, one that is under the protection of the US Federal Government. But that service shouldn’t feel the need to “compete” or to advertise. If they have money for cycling-team sponsorships, then they are outside their mission, IMO.

Won’t bother them a bit. Fed Ex and UPS are not organized for extensive “home delivery”. We get it here because there are a number of regular customers on this route for them to count on serving every day ~ we get a lot of stuff ourselves.

What has happened to all the representations about being truly competitive?

You are so right! Remember back in the 70s when everyone was so worried about Japan having productivity gains over the U.S.? One of the things that was compared was the postal services of both countries. What they discovered was that while Japan had one person in postal management for every 34 workers, the U.S. postal service had one person in management for every 7 workers. It’s probably worse today.

I’m surprised at how many people want Saturday cut.

Ah yes, it was either that: Terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India: Ten coordinated attacks by terrorists kill 179 and injure more than 300 people in Mumbai, India,

or the first Thanksgiving,

or

The film Casablanca opened in New York City on November 26, 1942, as Allied Expeditionary Forces (AEF) secured their hold on North Africa ...

I happen to use Stamps.com for the ocassions I have to mail a package. I don’t know about others, but when I go to the post office in either of the two cities I happen to be in, there are long lines of people waiting for a clerk. And the clerks are almost always grumpy and treat you like their doing you a big favor helping you out.

I started out using the USPS for my business years ago...the nearest post office was always busy. It had four windows...no more than two were ever open. Other postal employees would stand behind them and watch or wander while a dozen people with tons of packages waited in line. I was there usually with just one or two quick items. On top of that, at least one of the two clerks acted like it was the biggest imposition to have to deal with the public.

I got fed up and signed up with FedEx. They have never missed a delivery, and the cost on standard delivery is either equal to or less than "priority mail" at the USPS, which I was told MAY arrive at its destination within two days. No guarantee.

No. 10 envelopes I can drop in a box. Packages that are important and time-sensitive go FedEx or UPS. The FedEx drivers in particular are the nicest, cheeriest people.

Postal employees are fond of repeating their “you can send a letter anywhere domestically for the price of a stamp.”

AND....?

UPS and FedEx charge based on distance (i.e. their cost) and rightly so. If the USPS tried this it would a) allow them to recover more revenue based on the same criteria and b) encourage end-users to use the USPS more wisely including the junk mailers.

Yes, yes, the USPS is not officially a government agency but they still think and act like it.

How so?

Anyway....I'm not even sure they didn't arrive...

I could have been scammed....

But anyway....less than 1/2 % "maybe" lost...I can accept that.
