Doesn't matter as long as the father acknowledges paternity. In fact even that isn't required. The mother can, and in '61 could pretty well get away with it, put down pretty much anyone on the paperwork. We have two great nieces, who now live with us, who bear their father's last name, even though the bastid never married their mother, or AFAIK the mothers (PLURAL) of his other kids. (Might have married one of the other two, but I never cared enough to inquire about it).
