sorry I jumped on your case. My post was too snarky.
I just am very proud that this priest has taken such effort and don’t want it mimimized.
Vividly depicted in the brilliant book, “The Lost: The Search for Six of the Six Million,” by Daniel Mendelssohn, and the movie “Everything is Illuminated,” directed by Liev Shrieber and starring Elijah Wood.
Padre,
My parents fled Ukraine in 1938 before the Commies invaded and many of the people who were “rounded up” and shot were NKVD agents that were responsible for killing 10 million Ukrainians during the prior 10 years.
They were killed for the “crime” of resisting communism.
By the time the Germans invaded the Soviet Union, they had four Einsatzgruppen of some 3,000 men each. Their activities were subsequently curtailed because: [1] they became less successful as the populace became aware of their activities and tactics, [2] the SS higher command was concerned about the psychological impact of the mass shootings on the executioners, [3] it was no longer viewed as an efficient method by Heydrich, and most importantly, [4] it was impracticable to use in western Europe, and of very limited potential for executing the numbers of Jews projected for the Final Solution by the RSHA.
Considering the vast body of literature on the subject, I am constrained to wonder how this is considered a new discovery.
The Wansee conference was originally scheduled for December, 1941, but Pearl Harbor, and Hitler's declaration of war on the U.S [Dec. 11th] postponed it to January, 1942.
The general outline that is in my mind is that the Nazis were cheered when they invaded, the Soviets were hated, but the Nazis became hated even more “but” there were Ukrainian German Army Units, and Units from the Baltics as well.
the NKVD (though I think it went by a different name back then) did the food confiscations and scourging cities and villages during the massive Soviet induced famines in the 30’s.
Ukrainians IIRC formed the bulk of the anti Revolutionary Forces in the 1918-1922 period and the Russians always hated them afterwards.
Thanks, if I recall correctly Goering had been basically demoted from the Luftwaffe command staff at that point but he did design or was key in implementing the policies.
Hitler was known to have said “never reduce anything to paper if it can be avoided” it would not be unreasonable to say no policy such as the murder of 6 million Jews, and an equal number of other “undesirables” without his approval and applause.
He made his intentions clear in his book.
Goering remained C in. C of the Luftwaffe until after April 20, 1945. It was only when he sent Hitler a message while the latter was in the Berlin bunker asking whether, as Hitler's designated successor, he should assume control of the Reich, that Hitler relieved him, and replaced him with Gen. Ritter von Greim.
I would imagine that Hitler’s desire to exterminate the Jews led to the invasion of Russia in 1941. Many Nazis thought it unnecessary or premature, since Stalin was such a cooperative ally. However, the bulk of Europe’s Jews were still out of Hitler’s reach and he could not tolerate that.
Effectively demoted PzLdr, after the fiasco over Britain there was no more confidence displayed in him.
The mosquito, built from wood was a particular sore spot..the FolkWolfe twin engine model was meant to compete with it, but was a major dud of an aircraft.
Either way though, it was the pill addicted Goering who was overseer of the policy...AFAIK...never heard who took over for Heydrich after he was killed though.
How many pictures have been posted on FR alone of Jews being shot in front of pits, as a means of protesting proposed gun control measures?
On the pilgrimage I took to Eastern Europe, we viewed a “killing wall” with the bullet holes still in it. So even at Auschwitz, people were gunned down as well as gassed.
Ernst Kaltenbrunner, an Austrian. Hanged at Nurenburg.
Well, it could be that this WAS the first time this reporter had ever heard about these events.
