Regardless of what the camps are intended for, their existence doesn’t bode well with the new expansion of power for the POTUS to declare such an emergency without the approval of Congress and for the possibility of people to be forced into the camps against their will. Add to it the fact that our former President insisted folks like the Minutemen were vigilantes, it’s all quite disconcerting.

Of course we all have biases and agendas. I’d be perfectly ok if all illegal aliens were rounded up, encamped until the border was effectively secured, and then deported.

FEMA camps for unwilling refugees are a central aspect of my next novel, which is 90% complete.

After two Richter 8 New Madrid earthquakes, Washington determines that the inhabitants of West Tennessee must leave for the FEMA camps, because they cannot be taken care of in place. Of course, you may not take firearms to FEMA camps. Most of the inhabitants refuse to go, and that is when it all begins.

This is one of the things I was upset with George Bush about during his last year in office. He should have known better than to leave something in place that his successor could use to their advantage to gain control in ANY way over the people, and take away ANY part of their rights. Heck, he should’ve known better than to craft those in the first place — a politician who doesn’t think about something far enough in the future to anticipate some of these types of “unintended consequences” shouldn’t be making these types of decisions. They should be thinking a little harder, IMHO.

[I don’t, frankly, see why the President would need this power in an emergency in a HUGE way. He should have the power of the Federal Government as it exists, right now, and that’s it. The Executive Branch should not be trying to increase it’s power base otherwise checks and balances do not have a chance of working as they should.]

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not “blaming Bush” entirely, obviously Obama is the dictator who is using these laws against the people (or would), but even the most sincere of people can create problems for the future if they are not careful. Bush may not have abused the directive, and genuinely thought it was good, but now Obama will use this to exert more power — and that’s a very bad thing.

Incidentally, it’s the same thing that is wrong with Socialist policies. They hand too much power to one branch, and one person, and one party, really. And, for instance, even if Obama DIDN’T abuse this legislation against the people, someone in the future would... It’s only human nature...

This is frustrating. Why don’t people learn? It’s not as if this hasn’t been “done before” in history...

There have been rumors about camps all over the West for years. I have been to three sites specifically identified by the tin foil hat gang. One is a cow pasture near Elko Nevada. Another is Fallon NAS which the constantly misidentify as “Stillwater Navy Base”. Fallon is too small with a great deal of security issues for detaining a great number of people. Actually the best place to hold people would be large stadiums. Very easy to maintain control.

“First of all, the “New Orleans disaster” was caused by the LOCAL GOVERNMENT not following through with their published evacuation plan followed by their refusal to allow outside organizations in to provide relief services.

Yes, I agree strongly with this. Under the Stafford Act, the feds can only provide what a governor specifically asks for. She did not ask for troops on the ground, portable shelter, power, sanitation, security, transport and housing of displaced people. She basically asked for debris removal and some money.

Even then, these camps sound superfluous and scary. If fedgov wanted to, they could put up a temporary tent city for 10,000 people with kitchens, heat, and sanitation on any suitable ground in under a week.

But permanent designated camps just waiting to be populated? There is no need. I think that if you have a tool you are tempted to use it, and detention facilities (humanitarian detention facilities, with barbed wire to keep miscreants out) just are not needed.

It's a bill in Congress, we can call and write, shine a big light on this.

Actually the best place to hold people would be large stadiums. Very easy to maintain control.

They are perfect for initial "roundups" as in Chile. But they have huge problems after the first couple days. They are really just initial holding sites, the internees must be transferred quickly to permanent facilities. They are also good for this transfer function, since they have fenced and gated areas perfect for prison buses etc.

Alcatraz is a bad idea. First, the old prison, now a popular tourist site, would have to be bulldozed down to bedrock and a new prison would have to be built from scratch. This would take a few years.

Second, the highly visible island would be a magnet for protesters in boats with horns, flags, bullhorns etc. This is in the SF Bay area after all!

Much better (from the fedgoon perspective) to build Supermax prisons far out in the boondocks, away from all cities, where visitors, protesters and reporters will never come.
