Dubai Court Fines Man For Cross-Dressing

Washington, DC (THE MEDIA LINE) - An Indian national working in Dubai as an administrator with a property development company has been sentenced to a six-month suspended jail term and fined $2,722 for cross-dressing and wearing mascara in public, the Dubai newspaper Gulf News reported.

The man was arrested by a police officer in civilian clothes in the Mall of the Emirates in what the police described as a glittering outfit, a bra, mascara, women's perfume and a wig.

The defendant claims he was cross-dressing as part of his preparation for a small part in an upcoming Bollywood movie, when he received an urgent phone call. He also disputes claims that he tried to bribe the police officer who arrested him, arguing that he simply offered to pay the fine on the spot.

There are approximately 1.2 to 1.3 million Indians currently working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to Indian diaspora groups.

While most migrant workers from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh work in what was until recently a booming construction industry, there are also a large number of Indians working as white-collar managers in a variety of private companies in the seven Emirates that make up the UAE.

While Dubai has worked to promote itself as modern and open society, human rights progress remains scant. According to Human Rights Watch, authorities censor and harass human rights activists, impeding independent reporting that could help curb abuses.

I don't think the occasional cross-dresser is going to lead to societal collapse. It's not a danger great enough to warrant government fines.

All libs need to know (and like) about Muslims is that they hate America and Christianity and want to see both destroyed.

So, a fine for cross dressing
and lashes for smoking.

Sounds as screwed up as liberals.

"I don't think the occasional cross-dresser is going to lead to societal collapse. It's not a danger great enough to warrant government fines."

Yes, because as we know so well in this country, society is great at finding its own boundaries, and a little liberalism doesn't give you a fast track to homo schools and a large percentage of your population having an deep personal hatred of your country and culture. Yes, the "give them an inch" strategy works just great! We've seen that over the past 5 or 6 decades haven't we. I don't know what I was thinking!

You tax that which you seek to prevent. So in America, we tax work and saving.

Just so we’re clear on this...you think it’s okay for a government to punish a man for the “crime” of wearing a dress?

So we're clear, here's what I said:

they value their society and don’t want it turning into madness. who can honestly blame them?

I can't be any more clear than that, I think. This isn't a clear world. Sometimes clarity is less clear than ambiguity.

Just so we're clear, do you disagree that our society has followed a pattern of incremental liberalism, the first stages of which seemed fair enough, but then once the camel's nose was under the tent, the tent was rapidly turned upside down.

So-called "conservatives" of today accept things that their grandparents would have found absolutely unacceptable.

So can I blame someone for not wanting to become the boiling frog in the pot? No, I can't.

So then you do *not* think it is appropriate for a government to impose fines on a man for wearing a dress in public, but you merely understand why a country would have such a law?

Sort of a "I do not condone, but I understand" kind of a thing?

Just so we're clear, do you disagree that our society has followed a pattern of incremental liberalism, the first stages of which seemed fair enough, but then once the camel's nose was under the tent, the tent was rapidly turned upside down.

No, I do not disagree with you. Undoubtedly the aspects of modern "liberalism" we *both* find objectionable wouldn't have come to pass were it not for earlier stages of true liberalism that we would both (probably) find reasonable. For example, we wouldn't have laws prohibiting employment discrimination against gays were it not for the decriminalization of homosexuality.

Of course, we also would not have Islam taught in public schools were it not for this country's history of religious freedom, nor would we have 12-year-olds wearing sexually suggestive clothing were it not for earlier generations allowing women to wear pants and show ankles in public.

So I can comprehend why Islamic crap hole countries crush religious freedom and cover their women from head to toe. They don't want to see their kids taught the "wrong" religious ideals or their daughters eventually ending up like the American girls they see on MTV.

But I still blame them for misusing the government to do things that governments shouldn't do.
