Several years ago, a freight train was scheduled to pass through Chicago. The train included several tanker cars containing napalm. The intended destination for these tanker cars was an area refinery were the obsolete napalm was to be disposed of. The freight shipment was derailed, literally, due to the protests and grandstanding actions of a publicity seeking politician. This individual warned that the train threatened the safety of all Chicagoans and posed an inviting target for a terrorist attack that could create a fiery holocaust that could spread death and devastation throughout the entire city. A few Sixties era hippies opposed to the Viet Nam War nodded their heads in approval.
Logic played no part in this blatant publicity grab. What is napalm? In its simplest terms, napalm is a jellified form of petroleum that can be used in aerial bombardments to create fires. Once reprocessed and refined the jelly can be converted into ordinary gasoline. In effect, the potential hazard posed by the railroad cars seemed every bit as dangerous as shipping crude oil to a refinery or a tanker truck delivering gasoline to your neighborhood filling station. Who was the raving politician in this scenario, you may ask? His name was and is Rod R. Blagojevich.
