Prince William fans Falkland's fury
The Australian ^ | 3rd February 2009

Posted on 02/02/2009 6:02:42 PM PST by naturalman1975

PRINCE William's military deployment to the Falkland Islands has reignited the row over the archipelago's sovereignty.

"This circumstance only serves to once again highlight Britain's ongoing military presence in land and sea areas that are part of the Argentine Republic's national territories," an aide to Foreign Minister Jorge Taina said today.

Argentina claims ownership of the islands it calls the Malvinas.

Prince William will be sent to the Falklands by the Royal Air Force to serve as a search and rescue pilot for a period of three months, Britain's Daily Telegraph reports.

He completes his 18-month RAF course later this year.

Argentines are worse scammers than the Nigerians, they only do it with a latino accent. They truly believe that they are entitled to whatever is closest to them, including little things like...oh say...Uruguay and Paraguay.

The Brits could never again pull off what they managed in 1983. That Navy is gone.

We visited the Falkland Islands in December 2004 (summertime there) ... it was sad to see how much of the area was off-limits due to mines planted by the Argentines. We did, however, LOVE seeing these guys ...

Why is it that none of the male royals is ever put in the jet pipeline? Much less risky than being in choppers or an armoured unit. And good to see you old man.

I’d think the investment in training time wouldn’t be worth the time actually spent on duty. It would take a slot from a pilot who would actually make a career out of it.

I sincerely doubt it would take the Royal Navy to defeat whatever the Argentines could muster to throw at the Faulklands.

I’m sure the Argentine navy ain’t what it was in ‘83 either—and could easily be dispatched by a couple cruise missiles....

I don't know about that but I do know that the British Empire was the greatest force for good the world has ever known. It was the largest empire and at its height controlled one fourth of the world's population and land area. The decline of the British Empire may be a good thing in politically correct circles but the world is still a poorer place without the British Empire.

Don't forget Pitcairn Island, St. Helena, Ascension Island, Turks and Caicos Islands, Bermuda, and scattered other pinpricks of land.

In 1820 Argentina claims the islands as heir to Spanish claims.
1823: President Monroe proclaims that the New World was no longer to be subject to new colonization by the European powers.
1833: Britain takes control of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).
1895: President Cleveland considers a territorial dispute between Britain and Venezuela to be covered by the Monroe Doctrine.
1982: Argentina captures the islands by force, and loses them again a couple of months later--the US sides with the UK.

Maybe 149 years is too long a period to let one's claims go unenforced.

The RN has lost its ability to project power in a meaningful way. Sure, Argentina might also be weaker, but other threats will emerge, and Britain will be forced to kowtow or turn tail.

I've had Argentine employees for the past seven years, and they are some of the finest and most professional people I've had the privilege to be associated with. We in the US could learn a thing or two or three from the wonderful people of Argentina.

I have no doubt that scumbags can be found everywhere, but your generalization does a grave injustice to some very decent people.

Misleading headline. There is no evidence the Falklanders themselves are stroppy with Wills.

If the sub-editor meant "fury connected with the Falklands situation" then the apostrophe should not have been used.

It's "Falklands-Fury" not "Fury of the Falklands"

It’s not the ships. It’s the men.

It's the carrier-based organic air cover.

The deciding capability that allowed Thatcher to retake the Falklands were the radar-equipped Sea Harrier FR.1s based aboard Invincible and Hermes. With the retirement of the Shar FA.2s (which carried AIM-120s and were amongst the most effective fighters on the planet) the RN carrier fleet now lacks that capability completely, sharing non-radar Harrier GR.7s and .9s with the RAF. There are no plans, zero, to upgrade some of the RAF/RN Joint Force Harrier Harriers with radar, as with some of their AV-8B cousins in service with the USMC, Spanish and Italian Navy air arms.

It has been done in the past - the Prince of Wales qualified as a F4 Phantom pilot. Yes, it does take a slot away from another person, but it is considered of real value for the future Commander-In-Chief of British (and a lot of Commonwealth) forces as well to understand as much of the military as possible.

In William’s case, he is actually seriously contemplating having a long term military career. And S&R is where he wants to be. He wants a real job and he’s aware the chances of being sent into combat is minimal, so he’s looking at other areas where he will be allowed to make a real contribution.

I'll see if I can find a reference for you - I know it to be the case because I have the honour to be a friend of the Prince and have talked to him quite extensively about his career.

The wings are about the only thing he's wearing there that he's genuinely earned in the normal fashion and he's proud of them.

All I've been able to find quickly are these:

The Prince of Wales praises the RAF on the occasion of its 90th anniversary at RAF Cranwell

The Prince, who trained at the station and earned his RAF wings in 1971, made his comments at the base's prestigious College Hall.

HRH The Prince of Wales: An exhibition to celebrate his Sixtieth Birthday

In 1971 he learnt to fly jet aircraft and obtained his RAF wings at RAF Cranwell. The exhibition includes His Royal Highness’s Flying Log Book and a photograph showing The Prince on a solo flight with his flying instructor Squadron Leader (now Sir Richard) Johns.

For starters, the hugely boosted garrison there would never be overrun, so an assault by the Argentines would be a miserable failure.

We’d cut them to ribbons on the beach.

And I do not agree that the RN could not do what they did in 1982. Yes, there have been stupid cuts, but the ships are better equipped, both for such a journey and in the weapons sense.
