President Obama seeks Russia deal to slash nuclear weapons
Times Online ^ | Feb 4, 2009 | Tim Reid

President Obama will convene the most ambitious arms reduction talks with Russia for a generation, aiming to slash each country’s stockpile of nuclear weapons by 80 per cent.

The radical treaty would cut the number of nuclear warheads to 1,000 each, The Times has learnt. Key to the initiative is a review of the Bush Administration’s plan for a US missile defence shield in Eastern Europe, a project fiercely opposed by Moscow.

Mr Obama is to establish a non-proliferation office at the White House to oversee the talks, expected to be headed by Gary Samore, a non-proliferation negotiator in the Clinton Administration. The talks will be driven by Hillary Clinton’s State Department.

No final decision on the defence shield has been taken by Mr Obama. Yet merely delaying the placement of US missiles in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic — which if deployed would cost the US $4 billion annually — removes what has been a major impediment to Russian co-operation on arms reduction.

We destroy our weapons while Iran builds theirs up.

Such a wonderful idea. It’s amazing nobody has thought of this before His Zeroness arrived on the scene.

What is WITH these idiots and their fascination to go back and try to re-live history -only doing it THEIR way this time ‘round???

Reagan took care of Russia, barry... And the war in Iraq is NOT Vietnam!

Libs today feel that they missed out on all the GOOD stuff or something! They’re just insane!

I can’t believe that idiot McCain did not bring up his plan to completely gut our defense and stop development of future weapons, including space. We are ceding our position of power in the world with Obama as President. I cannot wait until this garbage ends. Little do people know our military power and economic power are pretty closely related. When are on the decline in both right now thanks to this God awful presidency.

Russia will hide its nuclear weapons and we won’t look for them. This happened during the 1970’s under Carter, when we didn’t enforce the SALT II treaty, but the Russians were allowed to see our stuff.

The only thing that allows me to get any kind of sleep at all at night these days is the knowledge that we can blast the heck out our enemies many times over. (Although with O at the helm, it’s much less likely to happen, even if we are hit first). We shouldn’t reduce our arsenal by a single warhead.

Suddenly the Times is concerned about what things cost.

One more pleasant though. O also said he was against Star Wars programs. At the very least we HAVE to have that, You know to buy time to rebuild the nukes we end up destroying so we can fire back.

Maybe we’ll get lucky enough and Russia will protect us by not agreeing.

Don’t laugh, it’s more likely than our own President protecting us.

Russia will happily slash 80%.

The 80% that won’t work anymore.

Instead of destroying our weapons, can we just speed things up and hand them over to Iran?

No kidding - Obama may as well turn his plans for ‘changing’ the USA over to Putin’s underground, the KGB. OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE! PAY ATTENTION!

Expect the “peace in our time moment” where he take a big bow for the removal of Nuks.

Then he finds that Commie-KGB-Russians lie.

Only were stuck without a nuclear deterrent and he skates.

Having this IDIOT ideologue negotiate this deal IS A VERY BAD IDEA.
