The Obama administration asked retired Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni to be U.S. ambassador to Iraq but abruptly withdrew the appointment without explanation, Gen. Zinni said Tuesday.
Gen. Zinni, a former commander of Central Command, told The Washington Times that he had been offered the job by the White House national security adviser, retired Marine Gen. James Jones, two weeks ago and that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton confirmed the offer on Jan. 26.
"I started making arrangements," Gen. Zinni said, but became concerned because he heard nothing further from the State Department or White House. He called Gen. Jones Monday night and was told that Christopher Hill, the outgoing assistant secretary of State for East Asia, was getting the job.
Gen. Zinni said no explanation was given. "That kind of bothered me," he said. "I was told that I had it."
Tommy Vietor, a White House spokesman, said, "We have spoken to a number of extraordinarily talented individuals about serving in this important role, and have made no announcement about who will be the U.S. ambassador to Iraq.
"Obviously, the president has enormous respect for Gen. Zinni, and believes he would be on anybody's short list for a number of critical national security roles."

Will there be a posistion for Wesley Clark in Obamahland?
Anybody checked his taxes?
And it continues......
This guy is in way over his head.
What a classy transition!
Hitlary doesn’t like the military in “General”.....
He must be current on his taxes.
Zinni is a ninnie. He gave his name and reputation to a Investment Co. that conned GI’s by selling overpriced investment plans with big commissions.
It is largely out of the news now, but it would be dug up and make him look like a greedy wall streeter.
Pretty shaby way to treat a retired General. I am beginning to think this Administration is filled with a bunch of rank amateurs, starting with the top guy.
Hope n Change ping.
Man, Its Amateur hour over at the White House. Golly, you think Al-Qaida has noticed yet?
I think Zinni was an early supporter of the messiah. That pissed off the Clintonistas and I am sure when the shrew Hillary got into the State Dept, she deep sixed him for the job in Iraq. Look to see more of this from State Dept., I feel under Hillary they will go off the Obama reservation many times. No way Barry is going to able to reign in the Hildabeast.
The Clinton’s have their eyes on the White House, and Barry was too dumb to know you can never trust them. His lack of executive experience is already painfully obvious, just now he came on tv whining about the stimulus package and in his usual arrogant fashion, declared the Ameerican voters elected change in November, so everyone needs to get on board his stimulus version ,no matter how stupid it is.
“A shot across the bow of the discontented Pentagon brass?”
Bingo. He’ll put some civil rights lawyer or community activist in charge instead. Why? Because zero is an arrogant MORON.
Zinni was a board member of First Command Financial which was selling overpriced insurance and investments to young GI’s. The NYT had an article critical.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the rumors about current and former military opposing Obama in some sort of organized plan..it was in a thread yesterday.
LOL!
LOL!
Zinni was against the Iraq war from the beginning so I am not sure he would be part of that, but it is possible. I think Barry is going to have increasing problems with his generals, especially Petraeus. Petraeus knows his surge strategy worked and Obama opposed it, so when Barry tries to tell him how to get out of Iraq in 16 months, Petraeus knows the novice doesn’t have a clue. If Obama does not listen to the professional advice of generals like Petraeus, they will not sit idly by and watch him ruin what they have accomplished.
That makes me see red, just to cross paths with Zinni face to face...well, I’d better not say.
