JERUSALEM – Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu has declared victory in Tuesday's parliamentary election. Netanyahu told his supporters in a speech early Wednesday that he was proud of the gains by his hardline party. Exit polls show Likud coming in second, but in a better position to lead a coalition government because of a strong showing by other nationalist parties.

I think it goes to the Israeli President (Peres) to ask either Livni or Bibi to form a government in xx days. I guess it could go either way, but I really want Bibi to wind this...

The Right has more seats than the left. It takes 61 seats to form a government. Netanyahu is in a much better position to do just that.

He did “lose” (as in the other party got more votes) but governments are formed by coalitions.

For example, if the US had 4 parties and the vote breakdown was as follows:

Democrats: 24
Republicans: 23
Conservatives:15
Liberals:10

You could say that Republicans “lost” but when you add up Republicans and conservatives they have more votes and therefore will form the government.

Hope that analogy makes sense.

If you don’t have 50 percent then the only thing that matters is who can attract enough coalition partners to reach the 50 percent mark.

Other than for Israel’s sake, that’s another reason I want see Netanyahu win. I can’t wait to see Hussein have to deal with someone who won’t fall for his much-vaunted “charm”, someone who understand the reality of the ME and isn’t playing Hussein’s game.

Just as in Minnesota, for example, the fact that someone like zippi lippi could even be so close to the reins of power is apalling.

Yes, I'm sure he said "hardline party." Leave it up to AP. They can't help but editorialize.

That’s how I thought it worked-the winner is whoever is in a position to form a government.
