CONGRESS $HOPPING CARTS
New York Post ^ | February 11, 2009 | GEOFF EARLE

Posted on 02/11/2009 6:34:30 AM PST by Virginia Ridgerunner

The federal government is preparing to spend millions to purchase a fleet of small electric vehicles that critics compare to golf carts.

The $838 billion economic stimulus bill that passed the Senate yesterday contains $300 million for the government to purchase a fleet of "green" cars.

But the money won't just go to buy fuel-efficient hybrids such as the Ford Escape or Chevy Volt.

The cash also can be used to purchase "neighborhood electric vehicles."

The NEVs, which resemble streamlined golf carts, scoot at up to 25 mph, operate on battery power and can be plugged into 110-volt outlets for charging.

So I won’t get a pony but I can get a golf cart?

Wouldn't increase your utility bill?

$300 million pork for vehicles that cannot be driven on streets of most jurisdictions. Sounds like pork for the residents of The Villages down in Florida, middle class snowbird retirees. Omama is busting the budget for crap.

I got one of these GEM cars when they came with the AZ 100% tax credit boondoggle - about the 2000 tax year - again, a badly thought out green energy scam.

I am not really impressed, I got 1,100 miles and the batteries failed. A new set of 6 batteries is about $1600 from Chrysler.

The electric cost per mile might be low, but the operational cost per mile is out of sight!!

A gas powered 25 mph golf cart would be more efficient...:^)

We have a winner!

When Hussein delivers mine, it'll only take me 3 times as long to drive to school and work. Will I also get a trailer to carry all the kids' backpacks and such or will I get a second one and Tommy's chauffeur to cart it?

I’d like to see these congress leeches driving one of those tax-wasting vehicles around DC when it’s below freezing.

They’ll be back in their limos with the heat turned up - guaranteed.

So, what does one have to do to get a unicorn that craps Skittles?

Cushman made similar vehicles for urban and campus delivery for many years.Definitely a niche market.

Any vehicle marketed for the needs of the majority of Americans needs to be : capable of going 150 miles between refueling, reasonably safe and comfortable in all weather, and capable of normal highway speeds,i.e. 65 mph.

We already know how to build cars such as the Pontiac Vibe which get 35mpg .That car /van is comfortable ,practical, and cheap on gas. I have ridden in one from Cincinnati to Fort Wayne, and had no complaints.

But such vehicles are not "sexy" and are not advertised/sold with the effort put into other vehicles.

Americans(and others) have literally bought into the idea that one's vehicle can represent and supplement one's sex appeal, beauty, economic status,or phyical prowess.

As a nation we COULD be driving safe ,comfortable, reliable vehicles from the technology and cars available and sold the past several decades. But most of us chose cars based on emotion and advertising. We COULD be using significantly less fuel.We CHOSE otherwise.

You’d need to be a gay Native American with a hearing disability who has been in drug rehab and who lives in public housing, doesn’t pay taxes, and has at least four kids with at least two different women of different races.

I initially was in the market for the seatbelt but since I couldn't find one that didn't angle right across my throat, I settled for left elbow room and the kids chose it for the cup holders.

Cup holders are important to us commuters!

I just note that there have always been quite practical ,economical models available ;but it has never been in the interests of commission salesmen to sell such a vehicle. The salesmen, dealers, and manufacturers all benefit short-term by getting the car buyer into the biggest, most expensive vehicle possible. The entire system has a strong bias against practical economics.
