resident Barack Obama is getting away from Washington for a few days to his home in Chicago, leaving behind Cabinet headaches and a partisan divide over his economic stimulus package.
Obama was to make a Friday afternoon flight with his wife, Michelle, and daughters to his chilly hometown, his first return there since taking office. Aides said he planned a low-key, four-day holiday weekend, including a Valentine's Day dinner on Saturday with his wife and a likely basketball game with friends.
Congress this week reached a compromise on a $790 billion economic package that Obama had wanted to sign before he went on vacation. Instead, he was likely to see Congress pass it while watching C-SPAN.
"Diverse viewpoints are the lifeblood of our democracy. Debating them is how we learn from each other's perspective. We temper each other's excesses, we make better decisions," Obama said Thursday in Peoria, Ill., where he stumped for final passage of the massive tax cutting and spending bill aimed at jolting the economy back to life.
"But the debate is now coming to an end. ... It is time for Congress to act, and I hope they act in a bipartisan fashion."
But even as he anticipated victory on the stimulus bill, he suffered a major setback when a third member of his Cabinet withdrew his name from nomination. This time, New Hampshire Republican Judd Gregg said he would remain in the Senate and decline a job running the Commerce Department, the second person to withdraw from consideration for the post.
"The one thing I want to make sure of is that people don't take from this the notion that we can't get Democrats and Republicans working together," Obama told reporters after Air Force One landed in Springfield, Ill., where the president spoke at a dinner marking the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln's birth. "I am going to keep on working at this and eventually we are going to break down some of these barriers."
Obama aides say the president plans a weekend largely out of sight, his first real break since his inauguration on Jan. 20. Last weekend he flew by helicopter to the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains.
During the time between his election in November and his inauguration in January, Obama stayed in his Hyde Park home and kept a predictable routine: gym in the early morning hours, breakfast with his family, then work at his office. He sometimes ventured out for dinner at restaurants or at friends' houses, but that dropped off as he neared Inauguration Day.
Obama aides said they expected a similar agenda this trip, which was expected to last until Monday.
We should start keeping track of how many times he leaves the White House, whether it be for townhall meetings, family getaways, or overseas jaunts, etc.
What debate has been allowed? F*** YOU, Hussein!
Excuse me while I wipe coffee off my screen!
I think you're supposed to capitalize the 'R.'
Resident Barack Obama is getting away from Washington for a few days to his home in Chicago,...
“Oh, so he and MO have already visited with the families of the plane crash victims?”
IT IS VALENTINE’S DAY!!! The Royal family needs a break...
He’s new on the job and doesn’t get there ‘til after 9?!?
How many days in the real world would that last - 2?
I guess unless you’re at a bailout bank - then come in whenever you want...
Laziness comes naturally for osamo. He must think he is in a part-time (J-O-B) as the prez. When the pressure gets too much osma will have a big meltdown.
I Know What Good Is,

Unless someone started around Thanksgiving or Christmas, I don't think that I've even heard of it. And, as a manager, if someone came to me with a request like that, I'd say (barring extenuating circumstance) that was the definition of chutzpah. Might even tell them not to bother coming back from the vacation.
I think that bass turd enjoys flying around in AF-1 a little bit too much.
HEY - Isn’t this unnecessary trip contributing to GLOBAL WARMING...?
Do you not remember how BJC used to try to slip away unnoticed from the WH for trysts?
Not very successful.
Barack, you bettah pass that U.S. financial destruction bill or you ain gittin NO Valentine’s present from ME iffen you know what ah mean! You be sleepin wit dat new dawg we ain got yet.
It’s become apparent - to me - that we have the biggest chickensh#t bastard to ever infest the whitehouse. He can’t take the heat. Someone needs to grab him by the ears - ala LBJ and the beagle - and take a picture.
I seriously do not expect Zero to complete even one term in WH — not sure why I think that but it’s becoming more and more clear.
He has never had a real job, was a lecturer, NOT a professor, “community organizer” means part time rabble rouser/troublemaker and the guy has NO executive skills.
Since when is Valentine’s Day a “holiday” needing a getaway, especially re the POTUS who has been in office less than one month! Huh? He and wifey were tired of being in WH after two weeks so had to go read to kids somewhere. Now there are all these dog and pony shows with set-up sob story welfare recipients in “bad” areas of sinking towns.
The whole presidency with Zero is a sham, but then we knew that going in. People are SO stupid — and the “voters” who put this phony over the top are the dumbest of all — dumb but hopeful that their messiah would take care of them. He won’t — but he and his cronies are trying to see to it that “we” the responsible people in the country will pay for the lazy and downtrodden.
No more — this is war — this is the biggest disgrace I’ve witnessed in my 60 years on earth. Everyone who has voted for this fiasco should be ashamed and the rest of us should really “shrug” a la Atlas. I am doing my part!
He probably had a totally different idea of what the job was going to be. He probably thought he would really be in charge and have the power, rather than be told what to do by the people who are pulling his strings. He also thought he’d have more control over the media but the honeymoon there is starting to unravel.
>Do yall think my boss would mind if I took a 4 day weekend in a couple of weeks?
No not at all! Just make sure you don’t do it every few weeks. [/sarc] [/cynic]
