Sacramento, Calif. (AP) --

California lawmakers were trying again Monday to approve a $42 billion budget-balancing plan state leaders say is needed to stave off fiscal calamity, but they appeared to be one vote short of passage.

The state Senate and Assembly reconvened after a marathon weekend session that produced some last-minute fireworks but no agreement on the most contentious part of the plan — $14.4 billion in higher taxes.

Lawmakers have been trying to pass a combination of spending cuts, tax hikes and additional borrowing negotiated by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and party leaders. The Republican governor and legislative leaders from both parties warn that California faces insolvency unless the Legislature enacts a midyear budget fix.

I would like to know why Arnold and the Republicans against this aren't out there complaining publicly in the news about these ridiculous tax hikes?

Going to listen now to the KFI 640 John & Ken show, they might have some inside info what's going on.

From the WSJ article, Why does this sound familiar.

“Darrell Steinberg, the Democrat state senate leader, expressed confidence that another Republican senator would join two Republicans who have committed to vote with the Democratic majority in approving a budget that would raise taxes and cut spending.”

legislative leaders from both parties warn that California faces insolvency unless the Legislature enacts a midyear budget fix.

It'll face insolvency if it continues to try to fund everything under the sun- even during times of recession, and sooner if taxes are raised.

What Steinberg and Bass haven't done is put pressure on the dems to cut as they should, making the republicans targets of public outrage. Very political, very chickensh*t, but perfectly democrat- ie. stupid little bitches.

Look, if you're leading the majority and can't or won't seek concessions from your members and this thing goes on this long- you've clearly demonstrated you are NOT a leader, pro tem or otherwise. In the corporate world, your ass would have been tossed so fast your head would spin, guaranteed. Can you imagine being a project manager and mucking-up this long to get a job done in the private sector? Forget about it! These two losers couldn't manage a McDonalds or a 7-11.

And, it's not like they have anything to lose: this state is so liberal they could cut taxes, services, and a host of other things and Still get re-elected. They could balance the budget on cuts alone and still be heroes tomorrow.

Today's democrat is nothing like yesterday's democrat. The Old democrats built highways and water projects that helped all of California- not just some constituent group. They cared about the health of the State and found ways to improve the quality of life by making major investments in infrustructure.

What we have today are socialists who only know how to take money from one group, and pass-out checks to the other. They have no vision other than to get re-elected by braindead zombies who'll gladly vote for them as long as they get a check in their hand.

I used to think there was some master plan to bring down capitalism via a Chavezian populist scheme to reward socialists alone, but no longer. What we have here are stupid people. Inept people. Unqualified to the nth degree people. Unmotivated people. Lazy people. Way beyond their pay-grade people. Politics was my only hope, people.

Worst still, they're in charge of the wagon train, headed for the Donner Pass, and don't even care. Worst yet, the wagon master is too busy making snow-angels to notice.

Don’t forget the increase in sales tax.... and gas tax.

When they force everyone out of business, and no one has jobs, and folks lose their homes and have no money to pay taxes,
will they suggest more tax increases to “solve” the problem?

They are clueless in Sacramento.

The msnpatriot account is apparently new to the California topic.

Dear patriot: The Austrian is for the tax hike.

Nothing substantial is going to happen, no significant reduction in government savings will be achieved, until 3/4 of the state legislature votes to disarm Prop 98.

There are only two significant funding issues before the legislature and neither party wants to discuss either one:

1) Illegal Mexican immigrants and their progeny
2) Prop 98

On the other side of the coin sits a Republican state senator who is willing to go along with unlimited tax increases if the legislature will simply hand control of the state to an emerging cultural group through a single, non-partisan election process. Any guess as to which cultural group Senator Maldanado is fronting?

I have been a McClintock supporter from day one and living the California topic.

Arnold should be questioned and criticized on his support of the increased taxes in the Mainstream Media, and campaign promises. He is conveniently being lumped in with Democrat support for the budget by them.

Arnold is included in the KFI 640 John & Ken Tax Revolt.

Well, if you were working in a State legislator's office, answering the phones, I think you would believe that people are protesting about it.

Get on the phone and tell them NO!

Arnold is not against it. He is leading the charge FOR it and maligning the Republicans who dare to oppose it.

Going to listen now to the KFI 640 John & Ken show, they might have some inside info what's going on.

Or, you could just read one of the hundreds of FR threads with keyword: calbudget.

Arnold should be questioned and criticized on his support of the increased taxes

Dear Patriot;

1) California's Austrian interloper has the full faith and support of the California Republican Party. He will not be criticized or questioned by the party apparatus. See the FlashReport for confirmation.

2) Not only does the Austrian support a tax increase, but this time around, the governor, not the Democrats, proposed the tax increases .... and the borrowing.

3) California's Democrats are like restless children. Then can be managed by responsible adults. California's governor, however, a classic Europen liberal, married to the US's first liberal family is the problem. Replace the Austrian with a reasonable adult and California is on its way to improved financial health.
