I am with you, Purr. I am without a clue about the significance of this, and hope someone can ‘splain it to me.

Several proposals are in the works that override state laws.

The most prominent of them are the FoCA and the Employee Free Choice Act.

too bad there is a supremacy clause and the federal government can override anything

That's not what the supremacy clause says. In order for the supremacy clause to apply, the federal government must first have the enumerated power to make the law.

I'm wondering if we could convince conseratives across the nation to file an extension on their taxes. There's nothing illegal about it....but it might starve the government enough that we could get their attention.

Most small businesses file extensions already - and it doesn't mean you have until Oct to pay, either. You must have paid all tax due by April 15, you just have until Oct to get all the paperwork done.

The rule on extensions is that you can file later, but any taxes you anticipate owing, even at that later date, are due and payable by April 15. If you wind up with a net tax due after a six-month extension, there could (and likely will) be interest and penalties due.

There IS something you can do.

Increase the numbers on your W4. Most people think it’s illegal to claim more exemptions than the “worksheet” allows, but that’s a falsehood that the form intentionally implies to the person filling it out.

Each exemption amounts to about $23 per pay period (according to my accountant). Bump it up around 10, and put that money in a savings account to pay your taxes next year.

They don’t get it, and you get interest - double win.

“Declaring its sovereignty while waiting by the mailbox for its federal stimulus check.”

Actually, I heard there is chance the SC governor will refuse federal stimulus funds.

Governor Sanford is against receiving the bailout money. I am in full agreement:

This is an editorial piece written by the Governor in the Wall Street Journal.

“the federal government can override anything”
“If that were true, there would no longer be states . . .”

And every schoolchild would learn that we live in a democracy.

The 16th Amendment needs to be repealed as well. Money which should rightfully remain in the state where it is earned is being sent to DC. Federal Senators and Representatives must them bow to the federal government in order to “get back” that money.

The founders intended that our national officials would represent their states in matters of national concern. Not that they would go to DC to play the you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.

It makes it nearly impossible to hold them accountable for their wasteful and unconstitutional spending when there are 435 of them. At the state level, the citizens of the state, unhappy with the way their money is being used, would be more likely to demand accountability.

The problem with that is if your total tax withheld is too far below what you end up owing, not only are there penalties assessed, but you get the joy of paying quarterly estimated taxes the following year.

South Carolina has traditionally been one of the strongest defenders of state’s rights. I love that motto!
