The Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday that it will consider whether to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from coal plants, in a potential reversal of Bush administration policy.
According to the Sierra Club, Lisa Jackson, the new E.P.A. administrator, has granted its petition that the agency reconsider a controversial decision in December by Stephen Johnson, the Bush administrations E.P.A. administrator, stating that officials weighing federal applications by utilities to build new coal-fired power plants cannot consider their greenhouse gas output.
Todays announcement should cast significant further doubt on the approximately 100 coal-fired power plants that the industry is trying to rush through the permitting process without any limits on carbon dioxide, said David Bookbinder, the chief climate counsel for the Sierra Club, in a statement.
But coal industry representatives played down the E.P.A. move. This development was really expected, but our friends in the environmental community are making much of it nonetheless, said Frank Maisano, an energy specialist with Bracewell & Giuliani and a spokesman for Desert Rock, a large proposed coal plant in New Mexico, in an e-mailed message to the news media.
Nonetheless, for the battered coal industry, todays announcement is yet another dose of bad news, and environmentalists see it as the latest sign that a long-running battle over carbon dioxide regulation could be turning in their favor.

He said he was not at all worried about the security of the American people in bringing the detainees here. Not in the least worried about that. His reasoning was this: Al Qaeda doesnt have conscience theyre not interested in going back and springing these guys. Theyre forgotten once they are put away in our federal facilities. He said, furthermore there are so many soft targets in the United States, like a shopping mall, why would Al Qaeda go after a hard target like a federal lock up or military prison, when they could choose a soft target.
Burlingame later added that Obama was non-committal about visiting Guantanamo Bay when she asked him

The same environmental kooks destroyed our nuclear electric power industry. The U. S. developed this industry, yet our government stymied our nuclear advantage, and then allowed the French and other European nations to take advantage of our technology and become leaders in the field. We continue to suffer from this stupidity.
Now they are going to do the same to our coal industry, but who can express surprise. Obama promised to do so in campaign speeches in both Ohio and Pennsylvania. Yet he carried both states. Be very careful what you ask for because you just might get it.
Same here. What Bush pushed through allowed the mines in SE Ohio to reopen. At the oment we hear about 6-8 coal trains going through everyday. Wonder how all of those miners are going to feel who voted for Obama after this happens?
