And, by the way, it's the wealth created by that manufacturing and the services that support it (design, R&D, finance, etc.) that pay for our foreign purchases and not the Chinese.
I’m so tired of the free traitor argument that we do make stuff here...play games with the statistics...take a trip to any store...try and find American goods...lies, damn lies and government statistical lies.
Also, the trade deficit and the money we owe China paints a far different and more truthful argument.
And you know what? If we were smart, we’d make even more of our own goods. AND it wouldn’t be that hard to make happen. Now you’re saying “wait just a minute.” Well, here’s my plan - we don’t put Buy American into legislation and get into trouble with our trading partners. We take a lesson from the Japanese. Huh? you say? Well, here it is... It is too expensive to manufacture many goods in the US. That doesn’t have to be so, because while American workers are expensive relative to some others, we are VERY productive. So, marginal improvements in the legal and tax environment can bring big increases in our manufacturing sector. More jobs for Americans, and a better balance of trade. Here’s a couple of suggestions to help US manufacturing (and no it’s not an “industrial policy” with all the baggage that entails). 1) Cut the corporate tax rate in half. Pay for the cut with reductions in government programs. 2) Repeal Sarbannes-Oxley. It didn’t stop the bubble nor prevent Madoff, it’s a worthless job killer, 3) Repeal every OSHA regulation passed in the last 5 years, and maybe make that in the last 10. No we don’t want people killed at work, but you have to admit we’ve gone overboard. 4) Admit that Anthropogenic Global Warming is a scam. And that description is being kind. Don’t participate in ANY multilateral agreements to “stop global warming.” Deal with consequences if it actually does happen. Prevention is way too expensive. 5) No bailouts, just bankruptcy. It will kill the unions, and it should. They’ve murdered several of our industries so fair is fair. 6) Drill here, drill now. And so on...
Surely there must be a list of this vast array of made in America goods.

We might assemble things here, but I guarantee most of what is assembled has parts made in other countries.
There is a difference in “made” and “assembled”.
America makes things that other countries can’t. Today, “Made in USA” is more likely to be stamped on heavy equipment or the circuits that go inside other products than the TVs, toys, clothes and other items found on store shelves.
You forgot about the houses............the houses built by illegals, sold to illegals at a price they can’t afford, which will end up being paid for by welfare which comes from your tax dollars, with a crappy car thrown in so they can drive down to the social subsities office to collect their food stamps to pay for their gas and food. And on and on and on and on.................until?
So don’t forget about our housing industry being our main manufacturing base now days.........K.
We make a lot of firearms, ammunition, and accessories here in the U.S., and that market segment is doing very well right now, thank you very much.

Kitchen Aid, Pyrex products - the list could go on and on -
What we don’t make anymore is the kind of cheap-aSS comsumer goods found in low-end stores, like say - WallyWOrld....
