Skull & Bones sued for Geronimo's remains

The heirs of an Apache chieftain whose remains are rumored to be held inside Yale's oldest secret society filed a lawsuit today demanding the return of their ancestor's skull.

Twenty descendants of the legendary Apache chieftain Geronimo are suing the federal government, the University and the society Skull & Bones in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to seek the return of his remains as well as punitive damages.

One hundred years ago today, Geronimo died of pneumonia at Fort Sill, Okla., but the suit alleges members of the society exhumed his remains in 1918 or 1919 and transported them to the society's High Street tomb in New Haven. The group rumored to have stolen Geronimo's skull, bones and other items from his gravesite is said to have included Prescott Bush, the father of former President George H. W. Bush '48 and grandfather to former President George W. Bush '68.

"To assure that all existing remains of Geronimo and funerary objects are recovered by Geronimo's lineal descendants, the Order of Skull and Bones and Yale University must account for any such articles that are or have been in their possession, or on their property," the formal complaint states. "And persons with knowledge must provide any facts known to them concerning the claims."

A representative of the Russell Trust Association, which administers the society, did not return telephone messages on Tuesday.

Skull and Bones, a secret society at Yale University, which published annual membership rosters, that were kept at Yale’s library.

Hey, secrets are very hard to keep, all that public publication, national recognition, movies, conspiracy theories.. it is a though job to remain secret. Keeping secrets just isn’t the same any more, it is very, un-secret.

[1] Geronimo wasn’t a Chief. That would be either Tazai or Nache, Cochise’s sons. He was a war leader and a bit of a holy man.

[2] There was a Fraternity in Ohio [Cincinnati(?)] that had [until recently] the skull of William Clarke Quantrill.

Forgot one:

[3] The skull of Mangas Coloradus, Chief of the Mimbreno Apaches was [and still may be] in the Smithsonian.

Hey! I purchased Geronimo’s skull at a flea market in Flagstaff in the 70’s! I think it’s still in my garage, unless She Who Must Be Obeyed threw it in the garbage.

Oh, they know .. they know .. but they can't say anything about it, otherwise they'd have to kill whoever heard it ....

That’s OK, I got his skull in Needles, Ca, back in ‘69. It’s smaller than I thought it should be, but it was explained that it was Geronimo’s when he was a child...

In 1918, certain remains of Geronimo were stolen in a grave robbery. Three members of the Yale secret society of Skull and Bones served as Army volunteers at Fort Sill during World War I; one of those three members was Prescott Bush, father of the forty-first President of the United States George H. W. Bush and grandfather of George W. Bush. They reportedly stole Geronimo's skull, some bones, and other items, including Geronimo's prized silver bridle, from the Apache Indian Prisoner of War Cemetery. The stolen items were alleged to have been taken to the society's tomb-like headquarters on the Yale University campus, and are supposedly used in rituals practiced by the group, one of which is said to be kissing the skull of Geronimo as an initiation.

Is this the source of the term skulduggery?
