Girl Scouts robbed as they sell cookies outside store
WOAI ^ | February 19, 2009 | Aubrey Mika Chancellor

Posted on 02/19/2009 7:44:48 PM PST by WheresMyBailout

(News 4 WOAI) Two little girls and their troop leader were robbed outside a North Side store Wednesday night. The Brownie troop leader became emotional as she told News 4 WOAI how she witnessed the thief steal from the two 3rd graders.

"They didn't take it from me. They took it from my girls," the troop leader said.

The 9-year-olds had set up and sold their cookies at the Walgreens in the Medical Center several times before, and everything had been fine. But Wednesday night, a man stole all of their hard-earned money.

"We were finishing up our shift and we were packing up our cookies," explained the girls' troop leader.

That troop leader, who doesn't want to be identified, said a man then walked up to their table.

"I didn't even think he was looking at the money," said told News 4 WOAI. "I thought he was leaning over to look in the box, like 'What do you have in there?'"

She said then all of a sudden, the man snatched their bag of money and ran off. He got away with about $250. The troop leader chased him, but he got into a car with a woman and drove off.

"The one thing that I was screaming was to call the police, and I just kept yelling out the license plate number," the troop leader recalled.

News 4 WOAI tracked that license plate number to a home on the West Side. Our crew knocked on the door, but no one answered.

"I try to teach the girls that nothing's given, you have to earn it, said the troop leader. "And they earned that money."

The little girls had to learn a very grownup lesson, but intend to continue selling cookies to try to earn more money.

"Both little girls are scared," explained the troop leader. "And they've learned, firsthand, there are bad people out there."

News 4 WOAI learned the man accused of taking the money was inside the Walgreens store prior to the theft. Police are now reviewing surveillance video from inside the store.

I guess they needed the money more than the Girl Scouts. It’s only fair that they make it theirs...after all, no-one was hurt.

Appears to be: “Select Site | WOAI.COM: San Antonio News” Thought you didn’t mess with stuff like that in Texas. If the address is known I hope the cops find the perp before the parents do. Well, just a little; take your time, boys, things like this just have a way of working themselves out on their own.

Stealing from Brownies is a very low act. I’d love to do a citizen’s arrest on that guy — but I rather suspect I’d be in a long line of Volunteers who’d get there ahead of me.

IMHO, adults should not be subjecting children to the public at large. Hanging out in front of Walgreens with a box of cash isn't cute.

While proper safety measures should be taken, kids should not have to cower their entire childhood for fear of strangers. This troop leader was supervising the girls, and that supervision probably ensured this incident did not become much worse.

So how else are Girl Guides supposed to make their money? Are you happy to write ‘em a check instead of buying their cookies? Or should they all door-to-door like Jehovah Witnesses do?

WalMart but yes, Brownies are too young to take night shifts especially in a high crime area, if that was one. Need a few cookie dads to work the booths with the girls.

I don't know and I don't care. Adults shouldn't subject kids to the streets, not even for money, was my point. Read much?

And I'm sure with a little thought the Girl Scouts could come up with fund raising ideas less lame than those you claim to suggest.

It’s about time to learn a few “grownup” lessons, like never leave the cash open and unattended, pack up the cash BEFORE the cookies, don’t work after dark, have backup help available, and trust no one you don’t know. Just what do these girls learn in Girls Scouts anyway?

The only error they made was not securing their money in a cash box under the table. Door-to-door is probably more dangerous and less profitable.

Well, one point is that this has happened before. I have seen at least one story of grab-and-run from last year, or maybe the year before. If I have heard of it before, why not the Girl Scout leaders and why don’t they educate their leaders and girls to avoid unnecessary chances? What good does it do to teach the girls about gender equality or other matters of political correctness and leave them “innocent” about the dangers around them?

> I don’t know and I don’t care.

I understand — gummint funding, gotcha. You and The One would get along famously. Maybe they should become his Brown Shirts: they got the right color uniform after all./s

> Adults shouldn’t subject kids to the streets, not even for money, was my point.

And it was a dumb point. Why not expose them to the streets? They were under direct adult supervision. Do you instead propose to keep them inside until they are eighteen or something? Wrap them in cotton wool?

> Read much?

Sure I do. More to the point, I spend plenty of time on “the street” keeping them safe. How about you?

> And I’m sure with a little thought the Girl Scouts could come up with fund raising ideas less lame than those you claim to suggest.

I don’t “claim” to suggest them at all: it is *fact* that those are my suggestions. I own them.

We’re still waiting to hear yours, tho’: or are you one of those folk who like to “critique” and gripe from the sidelines but have nothing useful to suggest by way of alternative?

They are young but they are apparently deemed old enough to be handling cash outside in the dark so they should be educated how to avoid the dangers and take proper precautions. I am sorry to say that we can’t wait until they are nineteen to educate young girls as to those dangers. (Incidentally, I wouldn’t let nineteen years old do that with only a female adult leader in attendance. I would have some brothers or fathers standing guard.)

I have a feeling this is only the begining. Times are going to get worse and people are going to get more desperate. There is a differnce between the depression of the 1920’s and 30’s. We live in a different world. More drugs and violence. We will see more crime. Instead of helping thy neighbor it will be rob thy neighbor.

They are 9 years old, and with them were adults in charge and who should have assumed those duties. They thought they were in a safe enviroment. Street urchins learn from an early age that no one is to be trusted, but they are taught that most people are. Well, they know better now , but it was still a shock.

I think you’re right. We’ve had over forty years of moral relativism to blur the distinction between right and wrong, and to make good people comply with bad people.

That is what elected Obama, amongst other things.

We have yet to see the worst, this is only the beginning as you say.

There are no safe environments these days: not churches, not homes, not schools, not shopping centers or medical centers, even hospitals. I wish kids could remain innocent and happy but we can no longer afford that. If I come across as somewhat extreme, I apologize. But if these kids are not having male guards to help out because of some misguided women’s liberation notion, I have no sympathy for those leaders and their newly-educated girls.

Well, the women in charge are not farm girls, many of whom learn from an early age to take care of themselves as well as some boys. They are housewives. I agree these women should know better, what with the number of gated communities. And it is probably going to get worse as the violence of Mexico moves northward.

This Walgreens is in the Medical Center in San Antonio.

It's address is:

7802 Wurzbach Rd
San Antonio, TX 78229

San Antonio proper, which this appears to be, is a higher-crime area, from what I can tell from a quick perusal of online data.

And I admit I may be hypersensitive to child safety. Several years ago, I left one of my kids alone in a hospital where he was taken hostage by a gunman for eighteen hours. I tried hard not to be smothering to my other kids (the hostage kid passed away a few months after the incident) but I am always considering the “what if” scenario. I constantly harped on the kids carrying money or other valuables where strangers might see them. They didn’t go to parks by themselves or ride bikes further than down our street. Both girls are now grown and making their way in the world. They aren’t paranoid but they are cautious.

“News 4 WOAI tracked that license plate number to a home on the West Side. Our crew knocked on the door, but no one answered. “

First of all, how is it possible to a reporter to track down license plates to physical addresses? Guess they pay off someone in the police dept. for that info. Second, how stupid do you have to be to go knocking on the door of a perp without knowing anything about the person? They are probably fortunate that the guy wasn’t home. Third, did the reporter really expect to get an interview? How stupid is that?

There used to be a website that provided such information. Originally it was free, then they started charging. I don't know if its still out there. Saw some sites that purport to offer the service; don't know if they are legit.
